Ahead of the much-anticipated fifth and final Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 series, the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) has paid tribute to two legendary Indian spinners, highlighting their significant contributions to the sport.
Two legends honoured at SCG
The SCG has paid tribute to two legendary figures in cricket, Bishan Singh Bedi and Shivlal Yadav, for their remarkable contributions to the sport. Both players have etched their names in the annals of cricket history, particularly for their stellar performances in Test matches held at this iconic venue.
Notably, as a tradition, the visiting team’s change room features calico rolls from the scorecard. By honoring these legends, the SCG not only celebrates their individual brilliance but also highlights their impact on some of the most memorable moments in Test cricket played on its historic grounds.

The maestro of spin
Bedi, known for his classical left-arm orthodox spin, was one of the architects of India’s spin bowling legacy. His performance at the SCG in 1977-78 during the Golden Jubilee Test is particularly memorable. Bedi’s spellbinding control and guile led to him claiming 12 wickets in the match, which included a career-best 7 for 52 in the first innings. His ability to turn the ball sharply and his variations in flight and pace made him one of the toughest bowlers to face, especially on turning tracks like those occasionally seen at the SCG.
The other spinner celebrated is expected to be Shivlal, although less known globally compared to Bedi, his performances have been crucial for India in the recent past.
