Bangladesh scripted history with a commanding 60-run victory over West Indies in the 2nd ODI at Basseterre on Tuesday (January 21). This victory marks their first-ever ODI triumph against the hosts in the Caribbean, showcasing an exceptional all-round performance. The match was a significant milestone in Bangladesh Women’s cricket, with both their batters and bowlers delivering under pressure to level the series.

Bangladesh’s batting led by Nigar Sultana

Bangladesh set a competitive total of 184 in 48.5 overs, anchored by a resilient innings from skipper Nigar Sultana. Her knock of 68 runs off 120 balls, which included five boundaries, stood out as the backbone of the innings. She also became the second woman to score 1,000 ODI runs for Bangladesh. Sobhana Mostary and Shorna Akter provided vital contributions in the middle order, scoring 23 and 21 runs, respectively. However, the visitors struggled to accelerate, with Karishma Ramharack from the West Indies claiming four wickets for just 33 runs, effectively restricting Bangladesh’s progress in the latter stages. Despite the early loss of their top order, Bangladesh capitalized on partnerships to put up a defendable score.

Nahida Akter shines with the ball

Defending 185, Bangladesh’s bowlers rose to the occasion, dismantling the West Indies Women for 124 runs in 35 overs. Nahida Akter was the star with the ball, taking 3/31 in her 10-over spell, which included key dismissals of Hayley Matthews and Shemaine Campbelle. Rabeya Khan and Fahima Khatun supported brilliantly, picking up two wickets each to ensure West Indies could not form any substantial partnerships. The disciplined bowling attack, complemented by sharp fielding, ensured Bangladesh maintained a stranglehold throughout the West Indies’ innings.

West Indies’ batting falters under pressure

The West Indies failed to capitalize on their decision to field first, with their batting lineup crumbling under pressure. Campbelle top-scored with 28 runs off 43 balls, while Cherry-Ann Fraser’s unbeaten 18 towards the end added some resistance. However, the top and middle-order batters, including skipper Matthews and Deandra Dottin, were unable to make significant contributions. The disciplined bowling from Bangladesh exposed the frailty in the West Indies’ lineup, leading to a disappointing collapse at home. Bangladesh’s comprehensive victory not only leveled the series but also highlighted their growing prowess on the international stage.
