In a highly anticipated announcement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled the Indian squad for the upcoming ODI series against England and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 during a press conference held at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Satuday, January 18. The event, which commenced at 1:00 pm IST, was attended by Indian captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

Key highlights of the squad announcement

The squad for the three-match ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy features several notable inclusions and exclusions, reflecting the selectors’ strategic choices ahead of these crucial tournaments.

Squad details

  • Captain and Vice-Captain:

Rohit Sharma will lead the team, with Shubman Gill appointed as vice-captain. This decision underscores Gill’s growing importance in the squad as an opening batter.

  • Pace Attack:

Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami has been included, bringing experience to the bowling lineup. His performance will be pivotal as India aims to reclaim glory in international tournaments.

  • Notable Omission:

Despite his stellar performance in domestic cricket, Karun Nair, who scored 752 runs in just seven innings in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, was overlooked for selection. The selectors decided against including him due to his long absence from international cricket since 2017.

  • Injury Concerns:

The inclusion of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah remains contingent on his recovery from a back injury sustained during the Sydney Test against Australia. Reports indicate that Bumrah is expected to participate in the Champions Trophy if deemed fit. For England ODIs, the selectors have included Harshit Rana in the 15-man in place of Bumrah.
