Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami marked his long-awaited return to international cricket on Tuesday (January 28), replacing Arshdeep Singh in the playing XI for the third T20I against England in Rajkot. Shami, who last represented India in the ICC World Cup 2023 final against Australia, was sidelined due to an ankle injury that required surgery post-tournament. His comeback has been eagerly anticipated by fans and cricket pundits, as he remains one of India’s most reliable pace bowlers.
Shami’s journey in cricket has been marked by resilience, both on and off the field. Despite battling recurring injuries throughout his career, he has consistently delivered match-winning performances. However, his personal life has also seen its share of turmoil. In 2018, Shami faced a highly publicized divorce from his former wife, Hasin Jahan, who levelled serious allegations against him. The cricketer has since moved on from that chapter, focusing on his career and personal growth.
Mohammed Shami’s pictures with Sania Mirza go viral on social media
Interestingly, Shami’s personal life has recently become the subject of social media speculation. Rumours linking him to Indian tennis star Sania Mirza have been circulating online, fuelled by manipulated and AI-generated images that falsely depicted the two as a couple.
These images, which allegedly showed Shami and Mirza together at social gatherings. The speculation gained traction partly due to the timing of their respective divorces; Mirza ended her 14-year marriage with Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik in January last year.

Shami clears the air
Shami, however, has vehemently denied these rumours. During a recent podcast with Shubhankar Mishra, he criticized the spread of fake news and expressed his frustration over the misuse of technology to create false narratives. “People should not indulge in such activities. It affects the lives of those involved,” Shami stated, emphasizing the need for responsible behaviour on social media.
Both Shami and Mirza are currently focused on their professional endeavours. Sania, who retired from professional tennis in early 2023, has transitioned into broadcasting and other ventures. Meanwhile, Shami’s return to the cricket field has set the stage for his participation in the upcoming ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025. His performance in the ongoing series and the upcoming ODIs against England will be closely watched, as it could determine his role in India’s future campaigns.
