Team India are currently undergoing a transitional phase, with Rohit Sharma at the helm as captain. However, with age catching up to Rohit, India are likely planning for the next generation of leaders. The team boasts a wealth of young talent, many of whom have already proven their mettle on the international stage. Yet, the question of who will take on the mantle of captaincy in the future remains a topic of much speculation.

Shubman Gill as vice-captain hints at future leadership

Notably, India recently announced their squad for the Champions Trophy 2025, naming Shubman Gill as vice-captain. This decision has been seen as a potential indicator of the team management’s faith in Gill’s leadership capabilities. However, Gill is not the only young player in the mix, as the likes of Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and others have also showcased the temperament and skills required to lead the team in the future.

Adding to the debate, former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has thrown his weight behind Pant as the ideal future captain of India. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the 54-year-old veteran suggested that Pant’s leadership qualities and aggressive approach would not only benefit Indian cricket but also elevate his own game.

“My vote for India’s future captain is Rishabh Pant. While Gill might be highly rated as a captain, Pant’s leadership qualities will benefit both India and his own career. If he is chosen, it will bring a positive change to his game,” Basit remarked.

He also offered his perspective on the ongoing comparisons between Gill and Jaiswal, stating, “Jaiswal is a bigger player than Gill. Technically and otherwise, Jaiswal has everything that Gill lacks.”

Expectations high from India’s youth

With a pool of immensely talented youngsters, expectations from the next generation of Indian cricketers are sky-high. Whether it’s Gill, Pant, or another emerging star like Jaiswal, the future of Indian cricket seems bright. Fans and experts alike eagerly await to see who will eventually step up and lead Team India into their next era of dominance.
