Wickets fell and batters crashed like a pack of cards on the 1st day of the final Test match between Pakistan and West Indies at Multan Cricket Stadium. As expected, it was a slow turning track which was visibly dry and a safe haven for spinners to dominate. West Indies won the toss and elected to bat first hoping that they might put some runs on the board before the pitch starts helping Pakistani spinners. However, the opposite happened for the visiting side.
A Noman Ali spin-storm
The West Indies had a dreadful start to the game after debutant Kashif Ali got rid of the opener Mikyle Louis early. The concerns aggravated after debutant Amir Jangoo too was sent back to the pavilion on a duck by Sajid Khan. The visitors had already lost 2 wickets with just 9 runs on the board.
The situation became hopeless for the West Indies as skipper Kraigg Braithwaite was dismissed by ace Pakistani spinner Noman Ali. The spin storm from the 38-year-old continued as he took a sensational hat-trick by dismissing Justin Greaves, Tevin Imlach and Kevin Sinclair back to the pavilion becoming the first Pakistani spinner to achieve this historic feat.
Tailenders Gudakesh Motie, Kemar Roach, and Jomel Warrican offered a stiff resistance to the spin onslaught from the home side. The three batters stabilized the West Indies innings to some extent which was once de-railed at 54 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. While Roach was dismissed on 25 runs facing 45 balls, a 10th wicket partnership of 68 runs between Motie and Warrican helped West Indies reach a total of 163 runs in 41.1 overs. Motie was the final wicket for the West Indies as he was bowled by Ali on 55 runs. Crucially, Ali took both the last remaining Caribbean wickets and completed his 6-wicket haul in the first innings.

A horror-show from the Pakistani batters
Pakistan might have hoped that they are in control of the Test match up until the end of West Indies 1st innings, but the West Indies bowling unit were up for the fight giving a tit for tat trouble to the home team’s batting line-up. Crucially, while it was largely a one-man show for Pakistani bowlers, West Indies’ combined effort cruised them back into the game as they decimated the seasoned and experienced Pakistani batting line-up.
Apart from Mohammed Rizwan and Saud Shakeel who made 49 and 32 runs for their side respectively, the entire Pakistani batting line-up succumbed to the determined bowling display from the visitor. Pacer Roach started the counter-attack for West Indies getting rid of openers Mohammad Huraira and skipper Shan Masood.
The openers’ dismissals opened the floodgates of dismissals for Pakistan as the entire middle-order derailed in front of West Indies bowlers. Warrican was the star of the West Indies bowling unit taking 4 wickets, Motie and Roach too, did not disappoint clinching 3 and 2 wickets respectively. The entire Pakistani batting order was wrapped up on 154 runs in 47 runs. The home side even after their solid bowling display trail behind the visitors by 9 runs at the end of the day’s play.

Pakistan is losing this test match. The formula has backfired-
WI Nos 9,10 & 11 are batting better than our frontline batters. They took it from 38/7 to 163/10. Pak went from 119/4 to 154 all out.
Trust Pakistan to make it interesting..!— Sardar Asghar (@smakhan1) January 25, 2025
