The excitement for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is steadily building as the prestigious tournament edges closer. Scheduled to be held in Pakistan and UAE, the event promises to bring together the best cricketing nations in a battle for glory. With India being one of the top contenders, fans have been eagerly looking forward to the team’s campaign, fueled by their rich cricketing history and a star-studded lineup. However, recent developments regarding Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness have cast a shadow on the team’s preparations.

India in trouble as Jasprit Bumrah doubtful for the tournament

Notably, India’s chances of clinching the Champions Trophy have taken a significant hit with reports suggesting that Bumrah’s availability for the tournament is uncertain. The star pacer, who has been struggling with a back injury since the final Test against Australia in Sydney, is reportedly far from being 100% fit. According to a report in the Times of India, Bumrah’s recovery timeline suggests it would take a ‘miracle’ for him to return fully fit in time for the tournament.

Bumrah has been consulting with Dr. Rowan Schouten in New Zealand, who previously treated him after his injury ahead of the 2022 T20 World Cup. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been exploring every option, including potentially sending Bumrah to New Zealand for further treatment, the selectors are also exploring backups.

“The BCCI medical team is in touch with Schouten in New Zealand. The board had also planned a visit for Bumrah to New Zealand. But that hasn’t happened yet. The selectors know it will be a miracle if Bumrah turns up 100% fit in the given timeline. The reports will be shared with his doctor in New Zealand. Sending Bumrah to New Zealand will depend on the feedback. The board and Bumrah himself are not willing to push hard given his significance over a long period of time,” a BCCI source told TOI.

“The selectors will only be informed if he is ready to take the field after the entire process is complete. The selectors will need to keep a backup plan ready for him. It will be a miracle if Bumrah makes it,” the source added.

Fans hopeful of Bumrah’s fitness

Despite the grim reports, Indian cricket fans are holding onto hope that Bumrah will make a miraculous recovery. Social media platforms are abuzz with messages of support for the star bowler, with many believing that Bumrah’s presence will be crucial for India’s chances in Dubai. Known for his lethal pace and pinpoint accuracy, Bumrah is a vital cog in the Indian setup, and his absence would undoubtedly leave a significant void.
