During the 23rd match of the Big Bash League 2024-25, cricket fans were treated to a rare and inventive display of athleticism when Melbourne Stars’ left-arm medium-fast bowler Joel Paris attempted a remarkable run-out against Melbourne Renegades batter Jacob Bethell. The match, played at a packed venue, witnessed moments of high drama, including Paris’ extraordinary fielding effort and a pivotal breakthrough that changed the game’s course.
Joel Paris’ unique run-out attempt
The incident occurred during the 16th over of the Melbourne Renegades’ innings. Paris bowled a slower delivery at 113.7 km/h that deceived Bethell, who missed his attempted pull shot and was struck on the thigh pad. The ball trickled away towards the leg side, prompting Jonathan Wells to call for a quick single.
Paris, displaying incredible presence of mind and agility, sprinted across and executed a no-look backhand flick at the non-striker’s end. The ball lobbed through the air and struck the stumps, leaving the crowd in awe. However, despite the audacious effort, Bethell had already made it safely into his crease.

Paris didn’t have to wait long for redemption. Later in the same over, he dismissed Bethell, who had been anchoring the Renegades’ innings and was just one run shy of his maiden BBL half-century. A short delivery from Paris climbed awkwardly on Bethell, forcing a mistimed pull shot. The ball took the top edge and flew to short third, where Sam Harper ran across to complete a sharp catch.
Bethell’s dismissal for 49 runs off 36 balls (4 fours, 2 sixes) broke a crucial partnership and provided the Melbourne Stars with much-needed momentum during the Power Surge.
Melbourne Renegades set a challenging target
The Melbourne Renegades managed to post a competitive total of 168 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. Bethell emerged as the top scorer, while Joel Paris was the standout bowler for the Melbourne Stars, claiming 2 wickets in his four-over spell.
