In an unforgettable display of bowling dominance, 24-year-old Gujarat‘s left-arm off-spinner Siddharth Desai single-handedly dismantled Uttarakhand’s batting lineup in their first innings during their Elite Group B match in the ongoing Ranji Trophy on Thursday.

The match, held at the Gujarat College Ground in Ahmedabad, witnessed a remarkable performance by Desai, who took a staggering 9 wickets in a single innings, leaving the spectators in awe.

Siddharth Desai’s record-breaking bowling performance

Desai’s spell was nothing short of extraordinary. In just 15 overs, he claimed 9 wickets, conceding only 36 runs at an economy rate of 2.40. Impressively, he bowled 5 maiden overs, further showcasing his control and precision. This remarkable achievement not only led to Uttarakhand’s downfall in their first innings but also set a new benchmark in Gujarat’s Ranji Trophy history. Desai’s figures surpassed the previous record held by Gujarat’s former left-arm off-spinner Rakesh Dhruv, who had claimed 8 wickets for 31 runs against Rajasthan in 2012.

Desai’s exceptional performance is now etched in Ranji Trophy history as the third-best bowling figure ever recorded in the competition. The top spot still belongs to Anshul Kamboj, who claimed all 10 wickets for Haryana against Kerala in November 2024. Additionally, Mumbai’s Ankeet Chavan had previously taken 9 wickets for just 23 runs against Punjab in December 2012, but now, Desai’s feat has added a new chapter to the record books.

Uttarakhand’s struggles against Gujarat’s bowling

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Uttarakhand was expected to put up a solid performance. However, they were quickly overwhelmed by Gujarat’s formidable bowling attack. Uttarakhand got all out for just 111 runs, with Desai leading the charge and taking 9 wickets. Gujarat’s Vishal Jayswal also played a supporting role, contributing with a single wicket to ensure Uttarakhand’s early collapse.

Despite the onslaught from Gujarat’s bowlers, only one Uttarakhand batter managed to put up a brave fight. Shashwat Dangwal, the highest run-scorer for Uttarakhand, contributed 35 runs off 49 balls, including 5 fours and 1 six. His innings was a rare bright spot in an otherwise dismal performance for Uttarakhand, as he remained not out at the end of the first innings of Uttarakhand. With Gujarat’s bowlers having dominated the first innings, the focus now shifts to Gujarat’s batting.
