Delhi Capitals (DC) have strengthened their coaching setup ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 by appointing a new mentor. The franchise aims to build a strong leadership group to guide the team in their quest for an IPL title. While DC is yet to name their captain for the upcoming season, they have made significant additions to their backroom staff, ensuring a blend of experience and expertise.
Former England skipper joins DC as mentor for IPL 2025
Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has been appointed as Delhi Capitals’ mentor for the 2025 season. The 44-year-old will work alongside head coach Hemang Badani, assistant coach Matthew Mott, bowling coach Munaf Patel, and director of cricket Venugopal Rao. This will be Pietersen’s first coaching stint in the IPL. Having last played in the league in 2016, he is set to return in a new role, bringing his vast experience to the Capitals’ dressing room.
IPL journey as a player
Pietersen had an extensive playing career in the IPL, representing three franchises from 2009 to 2016, including Delhi, when the team was known as Delhi Daredevils. He also captained the side in 2014 but endured a tough season as the team finished at the bottom of the table.
Pietersen previously led Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2009 and had a decorated T20 career, featuring in global leagues like the Big Bash League (BBL), Pakistan Super League (PSL), and Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Across 200 T20 matches, he scored 5695 runs at an average of 33.89 and a strike rate of just under 137.

Delhi Capitals’ strong backroom staff
With the addition of Pietersen, Delhi Capitals have assembled a formidable coaching team. Badani, Munaf, and Venugopal recently guided Dubai Capitals to the ILT20 title, marking the first major trophy for any Capitals franchise in men’s or women’s cricket.
The team management’s recent success in franchise cricket boosts DC’s prospects for IPL 2025, as they look to build a squad capable of delivering a strong campaign.
