Australia registered the highest-ever successful run chase in ICC Champions Trophy history, overpowering England by five wickets in a thrilling Group B encounter at the Gaddafi Stadium. Chasing a daunting target of 352, Australia rode on a scintillating century from Josh Inglis to script a historic win with 15 balls to spare.

Ben Duckett’s masterclass propels England to a big total

England, after being put in to bat, posted an imposing 351/8 in their 50 overs, courtesy of a magnificent 165-run knock by Ben Duckett. The left-hander dominated the Australian bowling attack, smashing 17 fours and three sixes in his 143-ball innings. Joe Root provided solid support with a composed 68 off 78 balls, while cameos from Jos Buttler (23 off 21) and Jofra Archer (21 off 10) pushed England past the 350-run mark.

For Australia, Ben Dwarshuis (3/66) was the pick of the bowlers, while Adam Zampa (2/64) and Marnus Labuschagne (2/41) chipped in with crucial breakthroughs.

Josh Inglis and Alex Carey steer Australia to historic chase

In response, Australia suffered early blows as Travis Head (6) and Steve Smith (5) departed cheaply. However, Matthew Short (63) and Marnus Labuschagne (47) steadied the innings with crucial contributions. The momentum shifted dramatically when Inglis launched a breathtaking counterattack, blasting 120 off just 86 balls, which included eight fours and six towering sixes.

Alex Carey played a pivotal supporting role, crafting a fluent 69 off 63 balls, while Glenn Maxwell’s explosive 32 off 15 deliveries ensured Australia crossed the finish line in emphatic fashion.

Despite the presence of pace aces Jofra Archer (1/82) and Mark Wood (1/75), England’s bowlers found it difficult to contain Australia’s aggressive batting display. Adil Rashid (1/47) and Liam Livingstone (1/47) bowled economically, but the lack of breakthroughs in the middle overs cost England dearly.

Australia’s successful chase of 352 is now the highest-ever in ICC Champions Trophy history, surpassing previous records and cementing their reputation as a dominant force in the tournament. Inglis, with his match-winning century, was named Player of the Match for his heroic effort.
