India’s pace wizard Mohammed Shami stormed through Bangladesh’s batting unit in their opening encounter of the Champions Trophy 2025. The 35-year-old wreaked havoc early at the Dubai international Stadium by taking 2 wickets inside the the first powerplay and applied pressure on Bangladesh. The leading Indian pacer not only managed to decimate Bangladesh’s batting order but also managed to achieve a remarkable milestone.
Mohammed Shami’s amazing performance
Ever since the start of the first innings, Shami’s emphatic seam movement and disciplined line and length were almost unplayable by the Bangladeshi batters. Opener Soumya Sarkar was the first one to succumb to Shami’s onslaught, followed by Mehdi Hasan Miraz. Both of them were sent back to the pavilion by Shami within the first powerplay.
With this, the right-arm pacer completed 20 wickets in the first power play since the 2015 World Cup and surpassed the likes of Mitchell Starc and Chris Woakes. Starc with 19 wickets to his name is now 3rd on the list while Woakes with 14 wickets has slid down to the 4th position. New Zealand’s Trent Boult is now the only player ahead of Shami as the leading wicket-taker in powerplay in the ODI format. The Blackcaps pacer has clinched 26 wickets in the powerplay so far.

Shami completes a historic 200 wicket-mark
India’s pace wizard has already taken 3 wickets in the match. With this, he managed to script history by clinching 200 wickets in ODI cricket. Shami took the wicket of Jaker Ali to complete the historic milestone. He is now the 7th Indian to take 200 wickets in ODI format joining the likes of Javagal Srinath, Anil Kumble, Ajit Agarkar, Zaheer Khan, Kapil Dev and Ravindra Jadeja. Shami has played 104 ODI matches for India so far and has an impressive economy rate of 5.56.
