In a significant development for international women’s cricket, young Ireland left-arm spinner Aimee Maguire has been suspended from bowling following the discovery that her action does not conform to International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations. The suspension came after Maguire’s performance in the first One Day International (ODI) against India on January 10, where she impressively took 3 wickets for 57 runs from her 8 overs.

Aimee Maguire’s elbow extension found to exceed the 15-degree tolerance level

Maguire was reported for a suspect bowling action by match officials during the match in Rajkot. Following the report, she underwent testing at the ICC-accredited Loughborough testing centre on January 21. The results were damning; Maguire’s elbow extension was found to exceed the 15-degree tolerance level permitted by the ICC for legal bowling actions. This led to an immediate suspension from international cricket bowling, as per clause 6.1 of the ICC’s regulations.

“As a result, in accordance with clause 6.1 of the regulations, Aimee is immediately suspended from bowling in international cricket. Her suspension will remain in effect until she undergoes a re-assessment of her bowling action which confirms that she can bowl with a legal action,” an ICC release read.

Big setback for Ireland

Notably, Maguire was originally selected for Ireland’s squad in the recently-concluded Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup in Malaysia. However, since the assessment window coincided with the tournament, she had to be withdrawn.

Maguire made her international debut in 2023 and has quickly become a notable figure in Ireland’s women’s team, having played 11 ODIs and 9 T20Is, securing 25 wickets in total with a highlight being her 5 for 19 against England in an ODI last year. Her suspension is a significant loss for Ireland, as her left-arm spin had become a valuable asset.
