Morne Morkel, the bowling coach for the Indian cricket team, has faced a personal tragedy as he abruptly left the team’s camp in Dubai ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Why did Morne Morkel return home?
According to multiple reports, Morkel returned to South Africa following the death of his father, which occurred on February 17, just days before India’s opening match against Bangladesh on February 20.
Morkel had joined the Indian squad on February 15 and participated in practice sessions at the ICC Academy, but he missed the team’s training on February 17, raising concerns about his absence. The news of his father’s passing has cast a shadow over the team’s preparations for the tournament.
As the Indian team gears up for their campaign in the Champions Trophy, Morkel’s departure is seen as a significant blow. It remains uncertain whether he will return to join the squad during the tournament. The team is currently scheduled to have an off day before resuming training on February 19, just one day before their first match.
Morkel’s experience as a former international cricketer and his role as a coach have been pivotal for the Indian bowling unit, and his absence will be felt both personally and professionally by the team.
