Pakistan are set to host their first ICC tournament nearly after three decades with the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, marking a momentous occasion for the country and its cricketing future. The last time Pakistan hosted an ICC event was the 1996 Cricket World Cup, and this long-awaited return underscores the nation’s efforts to re-establish itself as a premier cricketing destination.
Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf has expressed his excitement about the tournament, emphasizing that it presents a golden opportunity for the Men in Green to excel, particularly with the advantage of playing at home. The tournament’s opening match will see Pakistan lock horns with New Zealand at the National Stadium in Karachi on February 19, making it a landmark day in Pakistan’s cricketing history.
Pakistan Cricket Board’s massive overhaul of venues in record time
A crucial aspect of hosting an ICC event after three decades has been the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) extensive efforts to upgrade the country’s cricketing infrastructure. Yousuf acknowledged the PCB’s dedication in ensuring that all venues were renovated and modernized within an impressive six-month period, showcasing their commitment to the sport’s growth. He praised the meticulous planning and execution of preparing the stadiums, ensuring that Pakistan could deliver a world-class cricketing experience.
“After 29 years, Pakistan is hosting an ICC event, and it is truly a special occasion for every Pakistani. Full credit to the PCB for renovating all the stadiums in just six months. If Pakistan manages to reach the final, playing in front of a home crowd could serve as a huge morale booster. I hope the team plays with the same dedication and intensity that the PCB has shown in preparing for this tournament,” Yousuf stated in an interview with Samaa TV.
With stadiums in Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Lahore revamped with enhanced facilities, including improved pitches, upgraded seating arrangements, and world-class security measures, the PCB has ensured that Pakistan is ready to welcome international teams and fans alike.

Mohammad Yousuf names the teams with the best balance in the Champions Trophy 2025
Despite the home advantage for Pakistan, Yousuf remained realistic about the challenges ahead, particularly from two of the most formidable sides in world cricket – New Zealand and India. He described New Zealand as one of the most well-balanced teams in the tournament, equipped with a strong top order, an experienced pace attack, and quality spinners who can exploit subcontinent conditions effectively.
“New Zealand has a side that suits the conditions perfectly. They have three quality fast bowlers, skilled spinners, and a batting lineup that is solid from top to bottom. Their wicketkeeper is an all-rounder, and they have multiple spin-bowling all-rounders who add depth to their squad,” the former cricketer explained.
Similarly, he acknowledged India’s strength as a well-rounded unit, posing a significant challenge for Pakistan in their highly anticipated clash on February 23 in Dubai. Yousuf admitted that while India boasts a strong squad, Pakistan’s advantage of playing in familiar conditions could prove to be a game-changer. However, he stressed that Pakistan needs to play smart and calculated cricket throughout the tournament, especially against elite opposition like India and New Zealand.
“India also has a balanced squad. Pakistan has the edge because they are familiar with the conditions. However, they must play calculated cricket throughout the tournament,” Yousuf concluded.
