The Day 4 of the first Test between Sri Lanka and Australia at the Galle International Stadium witnessed a bizarre and unexpected dismissal that left fans and pundits alike in disbelief. Sri Lankan opener Dimuth Karunaratne, known for his composure and solid technique, experienced a rare brain fade moment that cost him his wicket in an unusual fashion. Facing Todd Murphy in the fourth over of Sri Lanka’s second innings, Karunaratne misjudged a straightforward delivery.

Dimuth karunaratne’s brain fade moment

Murphy delivered a length ball just outside the off-stump, with a slight drift towards the batter. Karunaratne, expecting the ball to turn away, nonchalantly decided to shoulder arms. However, the ball defied his expectations, skidding straight on with the arm. To Karunaratne’s horror, it crashed into his off-stump, sending the bails flying. The Sri Lankan captain was dismissed for a duck, having faced just four balls. Murphy was ecstatic, celebrating the crucial breakthrough as Australia removed both Sri Lankan openers in quick succession.

Australia enforce the follow-on with commanding lead

After posting a mammoth first-innings total of 654/6 declared, Australia dominated with the ball, bundling Sri Lanka out for a mere 165. With a daunting deficit of 489 runs, Sri Lanka was asked to follow on . Facing relentless pressure from the Australian bowlers, Sri Lanka stumbled to 75/3 shortly after the lunch break on Day 4 in their second innings, still trailing by 414 runs.

While wickets tumbled around him, experienced batter Angelo Mathews displayed resilience, standing firm at the crease. He remained unbeaten on 34 off 41 balls, striking five boundaries to keep Sri Lanka’s faint hopes alive. However, with three wickets down early and dark clouds threatening rain, Sri Lanka’s path to salvaging the match appeared increasingly bleak. With Sri Lanka trailing significantly and the prospect of rain looming, it will take nothing short of a miracle for the hosts to turn the match around.
