Hayley Matthews provided Mumbai Indians (MI) with a crucial breakthrough as Amelia Kerr showcased her brilliance in the field to dismiss Gujarat Giants’ (GG) Dayalan Hemalatha in Match 5 of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025.
Amelia Kerr’s brilliant catch sends Dayalan Hemalatha packing
Matthews, known for her clever variations, flighted the ball generously outside off, luring Hemalatha into an aggressive stroke. The batter, looking to clear the boundary, stepped down the track and heaved across the line, but her timing was completely off.
Instead of the ball traveling deep into the stands, it gained more height than distance, spiraling toward deep mid-wicket. Kerr, positioned in the deep, reacted swiftly, covering significant ground to her left. With sharp anticipation, she judged the trajectory perfectly, steadied herself under the ball, and executed a clean catch while sliding to ensure complete control.
The dismissal sent Gujarat further into trouble at 16/3, with Mumbai gaining firm control early in the innings. Matthews, pumped with excitement, celebrated the wicket, knowing her team had landed a massive blow. Meanwhile, Kerr’s athleticism once again highlighted her value as a fielder, making a difficult catch look effortless under pressure.

Mumbai Indians dominate as Gujarat Giants struggle at Vadodara
Mumbai have taken firm control of the match against Gujarat in fifth fixture of the WPL 2025 at Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara. Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Mumbai’s bowlers struck early and maintained relentless pressure on Gujarat’s batting lineup.
Beth Mooney’s early dismissal in the second over set the tone, as Nat Sciver-Brunt removed the Gujarat skipper cheaply. Shabnim Ismail followed up with the wicket of Laura Wolvaardt, while Matthews struck soon after to dismiss Hemalatha, reducing Gujarat to 16/3 within the first four overs. Ashleigh Gardner tried to counterattack but fell to Sciver-Brunt, worsening Gujarat’s situation at 28/4.
Despite Harleen Deol’s resistance, wickets kept tumbling, with Kerr removing Deandra Dottin and Matthews dismissing Kashvee Gautam. At 67/6 in 11.3 overs, Gujarat finds itself in deep trouble, needing a strong lower-order effort to post a competitive total. Mumbai’s disciplined bowling, led by Matthews (2/4), Sciver-Brunt (2/15), and Ismail (1/17), has kept Gujarat from gaining any momentum.
