From underdog to skipper

Rahane’s appointment as KKR captain is a testament to his resilience and evolution as a cricketer. Having previously played for KKR in 2022—where he managed 133 runs in seven matches at a subdued strike rate of 103.90—his return to the franchise comes on the back of a stellar resurgence. His stint with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2023, where he smashed 326 runs at a strike rate of 172.48, showcased a revitalized T20 game, silencing critics who had pigeonholed him as a Test specialist. This resurgence carried into domestic cricket, with Rahane leading Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title in 2024 and finishing as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 469 runs.

A nod to past leadership

Rahane’s comments also carry echoes of his extensive leadership experience, which likely influenced KKR’s decision to appoint him over the likes of Venkatesh, who was named vice-captain despite being the team’s most expensive buy at INR 23.75 crore. Rahane has captained India to a historic Test series victory in Australia in 2020-21, led Rajasthan Royals in the IPL across 2018 and 2019 (winning nine of 24 matches), and guided Mumbai to domestic triumphs in recent years.
