The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has been nothing short of a rollercoaster, with several surprises emerging from the group stages. Among the most startling was England’s unexpected exit. As one of the pre-tournament favourites, their early departure has not only shocked fans but has also raised questions about the financial ramifications for the team.

A dramatic return of the ICC Champions Trophy

After an eight-year absence, the Champions Trophy returned with a bang, bringing together eight of the world’s most formidable cricket teams. With a revamped structure and a whopping 6.9 million prize pool – a 53% increment from the 2017 edition – expectations were naturally high.

A thrilling final, poised to distribute a hefty $2.24 million to the victor and $1.12 million to the runner-up, is set for March 9.

England’s surprising campaign outcome

Despite being among the favourites, England’s campaign faced an unexpected halt when they could not amass the necessary points to advance past the group stage. Competing in Group B, England endured defeats against Australia, Afghanistan, and South Africa. The team’s journey was plagued by inconsistencies in both their batting and bowling performances, halting their progress prematurely and leaving fans and analysts in disbelief.

Understanding the prize money structure

The ICC’s prize structure is designed to ensure all participating teams receive a baseline amount for merely competing. Each team, including those eliminated early, is guaranteed $125,000. Further financial incentives were in place for group-stage victories, rewarding teams with an additional 34,000 per win. The prize structure also ensures that those finishing in fifth or sixth place secure $350,000, while teams in the seventh and eighth positions receive $140,000 each.

Financial fallout for England

Due to the nature of their early exit, England did not qualify for the higher-tier financial rewards reserved for semi-finalists or the top four teams. As a result, they will receive the participation fee of $140,000. In total, England’s earnings amount to $265,000, equivalent to that of teams like Pakistan, positioning them far from the ambitious financial targets tied to deeper tournament penetration.
