India’s group stage campaign ended with a 44-run triumph over New Zealand. The Indian team secured the top-spot in Group B and entered into the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy 2025 with their heads held high. However, former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull was evidently not happy with the kind of celebration and alleged offence Ravindra Jadeja committed during India’s epic quest to restrict Black Caps’ batters.
Simon Doull confronted Ravindra Jadeja’s controversial celebration
The incident occurred during the 33rd over of New Zealand’s chase, Jadeja trapped Tom Latham in front of the wicket. Latham attempted a reverse sweep but misjudged the line, with the ball striking his thigh. However, it was Jadeja’s dramatic appeal and celebration that sparked controversy. As he sprinted down the pitch’s center, raising his arms in exuberance, former New Zealand pacer Doull was visibly frustrated. He criticized Jadeja’s over-the-top reaction, expressing his displeasure with the manner in which the all-rounder celebrated the wicket.
“Did you look at that? You can’t do that. He should have been warned for his act,” Doull said while performing his commentary duties. India’s long-line of determined spin attack proved to be too much for New Zealand as wickets kept falling in quick succession as they fell 44 runs short during the run chase.

India’s brilliant display to remain undefeated in the group stage
Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to bowl first, a decision that initially seemed to pay off as India found themselves struggling at 30/3, with Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli back in the dressing room. However, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel mounted a crucial 98-run partnership, reviving India’s innings. Hardik Pandya added a valuable 45 runs, guiding India to a total of 249/9 in their allotted 50 overs.
Kane Williamson was the lone warrior for New Zealand, scoring a valiant 81, but he lacked support from the other batters as they fell short in their chase. Despite his efforts, New Zealand couldn’t overhaul the target. With this win, India finished top of Group A and will face Australia in the semi-final on March 4. New Zealand, on the other hand, will take on South Africa in the second knockout match on March 5.
