Former South African speedster Dale Steyn has set the cricketing world on fire with his sensational prediction that the first-ever 300-run innings in Indian Premier League (IPL) history could be witnessed on which date. His claim follows Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) dominant performance in their IPL 2025 opener against Rajasthan Royals (RR), where they posted a staggering 286/6 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. This total was just two runs shy of the all-time IPL record, which SRH themselves had set in IPL 2024.

Dale Steyn makes a shocking prediction on the first 300-run total in IPL

Given their explosive batting lineup, Steyn believes that April 17, when SRH takes on Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium, could be the day when history is made. Dale Steyn took to social media (X) to share his bold prediction, writing: “A small prediction… On April 17, we will see the first 300 runs in IPL. Who knows, maybe I’ll also be there to see it!,”

His statement instantly went viral, sparking discussions across cricketing circles. Fans are now eagerly anticipating whether Steyn’s prophecy will turn into reality when SRH lock horns with Mumbai Indians (MI). With April 17, 2025, looming as a potential record-breaking date, all eyes will be on SRH’s explosive batting unit. If conditions at Wankhede favor big-hitting, we could witness the greatest batting display in IPL history.

The perfect venue for 300-run madness

The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is known for its batting-friendly conditions, short boundaries, and flat wickets, making it one of the most ideal venues for a record-breaking total. In IPL 2024, the last time SRH faced MI in a high scoring encounter, they put up 277 runs, while MI responded with 246 runs, making it one of the highest-scoring matches in IPL history. Given these historical precedents, if SRH’s batting unit continues its aggressive form, the possibility of crossing the elusive 300-run mark is very real.

Additionally, Mumbai have a point to prove after a disappointing start to IPL 2025. They lost their opening match to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by four wickets, as their batting lineup struggled against the spin duo of Noor Ahmed and Khaleel Ahmed. With Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya, MI undoubtedly has the firepower to match SRH, which could set the stage for an electrifying, record-breaking contest.

Meanwhile, SRH’s 44-run victory over Rajasthan was a batting exhibition, with Ishan Kishan leading the charge with a breathtaking 106 off 45 balls. His innings was well-supported by Travis Head (67 off 31 balls) and Abhishek Sharma (24 off 11 balls), ensuring SRH raced to 94 runs in the powerplay, registering the fifth-highest powerplay total in IPL history. The middle-order hitters Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen then carried forward the momentum, making sure SRH posted the second-highest total in IPL history (286/6).
