Fans of Bollywood actress Disha Patani expressed outrage after her performance during the IPL 2025 Opening Ceremony was abruptly cut short by broadcasters. The event, held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on March 22, featured a star-studded lineup, including performances by singer Shreya Ghoshal and Punjabi artist Karan Aujla, with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan hosting the ceremony.

Patani’s performance was eagerly awaited, with her lively dance steps and hit songs such as “Do You Love Me” and “Malang.” But the audience was left disappointed when the live telecast shifted to commentary of the forthcoming match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) during the middle of her performance. This sudden shift of focus created a storm of disappointment among fans on social media sites.

Fans expresses anger on social media

Most of them turned to X (formerly Twitter) to express their displeasure. Tweets varied from asking for the entire videos of Patani’s performance to light-hearted jabs at the broadcasters for cutting away. One of them complained, “Where is Disha Patani’s performance?” while another joked, “Disha Patani should be hyped like US people hype Sydney Sweeney,” alluding to how American fans tend to hype their stars.

Others were skeptical over the move to delete her performance, with one individual posting, “Why did JioHotstar cut off #DishaPatani’s hot performance midway??Such a disappointment.”

Was Disha Patani’s outfit appropriate?

The IPL 2025 Opening Ceremony was a big show with a blend of music, dance and cultural exhibitions to entertain cricket enthusiasts before the opening match of the season. While it got everyone excited in the beginning, the sudden stoppage of Patani’s act marred a lot of the ceremony’s success. The fans felt the move was a loss of an opportunity to display one of Bollywood’s new generation stars in all her glory.

Furthermore, there was criticism of Patani’s fashion choice when she performed. In an ivory bralette and matching skirt with diamond patterns, her outfit received mixed reactions. While many commended her confidence and stage presence, others found it inappropriate for a family event like the IPL. Remarks like “Such outfits should not be allowed in the IPL opening ceremony, as under-18 RCB kids also watch it, and it sets a wrong example for them. Decency should be maintained” confirmed the controversy surrounding decency in shows targeted towards children.

In defense of Patani, her supporters argued that her performance was part of the entertainment spectacle that IPL ceremonies are famous for. They claimed that such performances are intended to celebrate talent and pump up fans prior to cricket matches. The IPL has always been a mix of sports and entertainment, and many feel that artists like Patani are important to the experience.
