With the highly anticipated 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) just days away, excitement among cricket fans has reached fever pitch. Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are set to take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the season opener at Eden Gardens on March 22. As teams finalize their strategies and fans gear up for another electrifying tournament, expert predictions have started rolling in, with former Indian opener Virender Sehwag offering his insights on the key performers and potential title winners.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, Sehwag joined a panel of experts discussing their predictions for IPL 2025, including the Orange Cap (most runs), Purple Cap (most wickets), Most Valuable Player (MVP), the four playoff teams, and ultimately, the title winner. Known for his straightforward and fearless opinions, Sehwag made some bold choices while backing experienced players and emerging stars to dominate the tournament.
Virender Sehwag’s pick for orange cap
When asked to predict the highest run-scorer of IPL 2025, Sehwag didn’t hesitate and immediately named KL Rahul, Delhi Capitals (DC)‘ latest marquee signing. Rahul, who has been in sublime form across formats, was touted by Sehwag as the strongest contender for the Orange Cap.
“KL Rahul has been in tremendous form recently, and I feel he can emerge as the leading run-scorer this season,” Sehwag remarked.
Rahul, known for his fluent stroke play and ability to anchor an innings, has consistently been among the top run-getters in past IPL editions. If he maintains his form, he could be a major asset for Delhi, who are looking to make a deep run in the tournament under the leadership of Axar Patel.
Sehwag’s pick for purple cap
For the coveted Purple Cap, awarded to the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, Sehwag backed India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bowler, who has become a key figure in India’s white-ball setup, was tipped to have a breakthrough season in 2025.
“Varun Chakravarthy could be the highest wicket-taker in this IPL,” the former Indian batter predicted.
Chakravarthy’s unique bowling style, coupled with his experience of leading KKR’s spin attack in recent years, makes him a strong contender. If he finds his rhythm early in the tournament, he could play a pivotal role in KKR’s title defense.

Sehwag’s most valuable player prediction
While the MVP award is usually dominated by all-rounders and players who contribute across multiple facets of the game, Sehwag once again placed his faith in KL Rahul, believing that if Rahul wins the Orange Cap, he will also be named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
“If KL Rahul goes on to win the Orange Cap, then there is no doubt he will also be the Most Valuable Player of IPL 2025,” the 46-year-old stated.
Rahul’s ability to play match-winning knocks and his adaptability across conditions make him a frontrunner for the prestigious award. His leadership and potential impact in crucial games could further cement his status as IPL 2025’s standout performer.
Sehwag’s four Playoff teams
Predicting the top four teams that will qualify for the knockout stages, Sehwag named:
- Mumbai Indians (MI) – With a star-studded lineup and a history of success, MI remains a strong contender every season.
- Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) – A team known for its explosive batting and revamped bowling attack under Pat Cummins.
- Punjab Kings (PBKS) – A surprise pick, but with new leadership under Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting’s guidance, they have the squad to challenge the best.
- Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) – With a balanced squad and strong all-round options, LSG was Sehwag’s another pick
Sehwag’s IPL 2025 winner prediction
When it came to predicting the IPL 2025 winner, Sehwag narrowed it down to Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants but eventually picked LSG as his choice for champions. His reasoning? The presence of his former Indian teammate Zaheer Khan, who has been appointed as LSG’s bowling coach this season.
“Either Mumbai or Lucknow could win, but I’m going with LSG because I believe Zaheer Khan, with his tactical expertise and experience, can bring out the best in the team. His guidance could be the magic ingredient that helps LSG win their first IPL title,” Sehwag concluded.
