After a dream start in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a title in their debut season (2022) and a runner-up finish in 2023, the Gujarat Titans (GT) stumbled in 2024, failing to make the playoffs for the first time.

Can Gujarat Titans return to their glory days?

Gujarat finished eighth in the points table, securing just five wins in 14 matches, with two of their last games getting washed out. However, under the leadership of Shubman Gill, the Titans have undergone a massive rebuild at the IPL 2025 mega auction and now possess a strong, well-balanced squad. With a power-packed batting unit, an all-new pace attack, and strategic reinforcements in both spin and all-rounder departments, GT looks ready to reclaim their dominance.

The Titans have undergone a significant overhaul ahead of IPL 2025, addressing key weaknesses by strengthening their bowling attack and top order. The addition of Jos Buttler at the top, coupled with a lethal bowling lineup featuring Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan, makes them strong contenders. However, they still have a few gaps to fill, particularly in the finishing department.

Strengths: A revamped and well-balanced squad

1. Explosive opening combination: Gujarat Titans have made a statement by acquiring England’s star batter Buttler for INR 15.75 crore. He will form a formidable opening partnership with captain Gill. While Buttler has struggled over the past two seasons, his track record in India is outstanding, and his ability to single-handedly destroy bowling attacks makes him a vital addition. On the other hand, Gill, one of the finest young batters in world cricket, will be eager to prove himself in T20s after missing out on India’s T20 World Cup squad in 2024.

2. Strongest bowling attack in the league: GT’s biggest upgrade for IPL 2025 has come in the form of a completely rebuilt pace attack. The franchise spent heavily to rope in Siraj (INR 12.25 crore), Rabada (INR 10.75 crore) and Prasidh Krishna (INR 9.5 crore) – three genuine wicket-taking options across all phases of an innings. Siraj will provide the firepower with the new ball, Rabada will lead the pace attack with his experience, and Krishna, back after injury, will be a crucial asset in the middle overs and death. The pace attack is further bolstered by the presence of Gerald Coetzee, Ishant Sharma, Gurnoor Brar, Arshad Khan and Kulwant Khejroliya, giving GT arguably the most well-rounded fast-bowling unit in IPL 2025.

3. Match-winning spin duo of Rashid Khan and Sai Kishore: Afghanistan’s Rashid, one of the greatest T20 bowlers, remains the backbone of GT’s bowling attack. Since IPL 2024, Rashid has been among the highest wicket-takers in T20s globally, with a staggering economy of just 6.61. GT have also retained left-arm spinner Sai Kishore, who has proven to be a wicket-taking option in the middle overs. The duo will be crucial, especially in spin-friendly conditions.

4. Reliable Middle Order with All-Round Depth: Gujarat have an exciting mix of stability and firepower in their middle order. Sai Sudharsan, who had a breakthrough IPL 2024 season, will hold the No. 3 spot. The presence of Glenn Phillips, Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan ensures the team has enough finishing power. Additionally, the squad includes Washington Sundar and Rashid Khan, who provide all-round balance, contributing both with the bat and ball.

Weaknesses: Concerns in batting depth & dependence on key players

1. Over-reliance on Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler: While GT’s new opening duo looks threatening, the team could struggle if either Gill or Buttler fails. In previous seasons, Gujarat benefited from Gill’s consistency, but if he has a lean patch, the middle order will be under immense pressure. Buttler, too, has not been at his best in the last two IPL seasons, making it crucial for both players to hit top form.

2. Lack of proven finishers: GT’s lower middle order has names like Tewatia and Shahrukh, but neither has consistently delivered in high-pressure games. Tewatia is known for his occasional match-winning cameos, but he needs to be more reliable. The absence of a finisher like David Miller, who played a crucial role in 2022 and 2023, could hurt the Titans in crunch chases.

3. Injury-prone fast bowlers: Both Rabada and Krishna have struggled with injuries in recent years. Krishna is returning from a long-term injury, while Rabada has had fitness issues. If either of them breaks down during the season, GT’s pace depth will be tested despite having backups like Gerald Coetzee and Ishant Sharma.

Opportunities: A chance to bounce back strongly

1. Shubman Gill’s captaincy redemption: Gill had a difficult first season as captain, but with a more balanced squad and a year of experience, he has the chance to lead GT to another title. A strong IPL 2025 could also cement his position as a future captain for the Indian T20 team.

2. Jos Buttler’s redemption arc: Having given up England’s white-ball captaincy after their Champions Trophy 2025 debacle, Buttler will be hungry to prove his worth. If he rediscovers his IPL 2022 form, where he smashed 863 runs, he could be the biggest match-winner for GT.

3. A fresh start with a strong bowling unit: With a completely revamped pace attack and Rashid leading the spin department, GT have the chance to dominate oppositions with their bowling. If their bowlers fire collectively, Gujarat can replicate their 2022 success.

4. Sai Sudharsan’s breakthrough season: Sudharsan had an excellent IPL 2024, emerging as GT’s highest run-scorer. If he continues his form and elevates his strike rate, he could become a key member of India’s T20 setup.

Threats: Challenges that could derail GT’s campaign

1. Competitive teams with stronger balance: GT will face stiff competition from teams like Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, who have well-balanced squads. The margin for error will be minimal.

2. Injury risks to key players: With Krishna, Rabada, and even Buttler having injury histories, GT will need to manage their workload carefully. An injury to any of their core players could disrupt team balance.

3. Adjusting to new player combinations: GT have brought in many new faces, and adjusting to a new lineup could take time. If they start slowly, they may struggle to find momentum in a highly competitive tournament.

4. Pressure on Gill’s leadership: After a disappointing 2024 campaign, Gill will be under pressure to turn things around. If GT struggle early in the season, questions will be raised about his tactical acumen and leadership.
