The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a major update to the Super Over regulations in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, with the aim of simplifying match outcomes and improving the fan experience. This move was decided at a meeting on Thursday (March 20), where captains, coaches, and managers of all ten teams were present.
Time limits on Super Overs
According to the new rules, in case a match results in a tie, the first Super Over has to start within 10 minutes of the end of the main match. In case, the initial Super Over is also tied, the subsequent Super Overs have to start within five minutes of the last one. But there is one important limit: all the Super Overs have to finish within one hour of the start of the original match. If there is no winner decided in this time period, the outcome of the match will automatically go by league table standings to take care of complaints of unwarranted delay and logistical problems caused by lengthy play.
Impact of new Super Over rules on the team’s strategy
This change in rules is likely to significantly impact team strategy in closely fought matches. With a fixed time for Super Overs, teams will have to be more effective in their preparation and decision-making strategies. The BCCI has also added a rule stating that each team gets one failed Decision Review System (DRS) challenge in the Super Over, which might bring another level of tactical complexity to these pressure situations.

Managing dew conditions
Aside from the Super Over changes, the BCCI has also introduced a replacement ball rule in a bid to counteract the impact of dew on night games. Second-inning teams may ask for a new ball if they encounter difficult bowling conditions as a result of moisture on the pitch after the 10th over. This adjustment comes in the wake of repeated complaints that bowlers have been struggling with grip and control while bowling in heavy dew conditions, which often provides an unfair boost to batting teams running down totals.
More comprehensive adjustments for IPL 2025
The changes to the rules of the Super Over are among a wider group of updates aimed at improving play and ensuring competitive balance. Of note, captains will no longer be banned for offenses of slow over-rate, and bowlers can once again use saliva to polish the ball—a move prohibited during the Covid pandemic. The use of two new balls in each innings also serves to guarantee fair play during matches.
