Punjab Kings (PBKS) have endured years of underperformance in the Indian Premier League (IPL), with their last top-four finish coming a decade ago in 2014. Despite consistently assembling star-studded squads, PBKS has struggled to translate talent into consistent results. However, as they enter IPL 2025, a wave of optimism surrounds the franchise, driven by a new-look squad, fresh leadership, and a well-rounded team composition. With an overhaul in both management and player personnel, PBKS is eager to rewrite its fortunes and finally break their playoff drought.
Shreyas Iyer takes charge as PBKS captain
A major shift in the franchise’s approach for IPL 2025 is the appointment of Shreyas Iyer as captain. Iyer, who played a pivotal role in Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)’ title-winning campaign last season, brings a wealth of leadership experience to Punjab. His appointment signifies PBKS’ intent to infuse stability into their batting lineup and build a core around a proven leader.
Iyer replaces veteran Shikhar Dhawan at the helm, marking a transition towards a more aggressive and tactically astute leadership style. Having led Delhi Capitals (DC) to three consecutive playoff appearances from 2019 to 2021, including a runners-up finish in 2020, Iyer is no stranger to high-pressure situations. Punjab’s management will be hopeful that his tactical acumen and ability to lead from the front will steer the franchise to new heights.
A massive investment in leadership for IPL 2025
PBKS made headlines during the IPL 2025 mega auction by acquiring Iyer for a staggering INR 26.75 crore, making him the second-most expensive player in IPL auction history. The franchise’s decision to invest heavily in Iyer reflects their commitment to long-term stability and a structured approach toward team building. Iyer’s association with head coach Ricky Ponting is another key factor behind this move. The duo had previously collaborated at Delhi, guiding the team to a consistent run of playoff finishes. Their established chemistry and understanding of modern T20 strategies could prove instrumental in revamping PBKS’ playing style and mentality.

Iyer reveals where he wants to bat for PBKS in IPL 2025
Amid speculation regarding his batting position, Iyer has shared his intentions that he will slot in at No. 3 for PBKS in IPL 2025 if coach approves. He emphasized that this position aligns with his preferred style of play and allows him to anchor the innings while also accelerating when needed.
“I already know that IPL is an integral part of Indian cricket. And if I had to mark myself at a particular position in T20s, it would be No. 3. That’s what I’m focusing on. I wouldn’t say we are overthinking the batting order, but this time, I’m quite clear about my role. I want to bat at No. 3, and as long as the coach approves, I’ll take on that responsibility,” Iyer said in a press conference. ”
Iyer’s preference for the No. 3 role stems from his consistent performances in that position across various formats. He played a crucial role in India’s unbeaten Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, where he stabilized the middle order and played match-winning knocks. Even in IPL 2024, when he led KKR to the title, he primarily batted at No. 3, occasionally shifting down the order based on the team’s requirements.
