Sunrisers Hyderabad‘s young all-rounder, Nitish Kumar Reddy, made headlines during the IPL 2025 clash against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Known for his calm demeanour, the 21-year-old lost his composure after being dismissed in the 15th over—a crucial juncture in the game. The frustration boiled over as Reddy threw his helmet on the floor while walking back to the pavilion, a rare display of emotion that shocked fans and commentators alike.

Nitish Kumar Reddy’s dismissal that sparked it all

Reddy’s dismissal came at a pivotal moment for SRH. With the team aiming for a total above 220 runs, Reddy’s wicket disrupted their momentum. Facing Ravi Bishnoi, the leg-spinner who had already shown his prowess earlier in the match, Reddy attempted to hit a tossed-up delivery straight down the ground. However, he misread Bishnoi’s googly entirely, and the ball crashed into his middle stump. Reddy’s innings ended at 32 runs off 28 balls with a strike rate of 114.28—a performance that fell short of expectations given the circumstances.

Frustrated Reddy smashes his helmet on the staircase

Reddy walked in to bat early during SRH’s innings after two quick dismissals—Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan—left the team reeling. Despite coming under pressure, Reddy showed positive intent and built a valuable 61-run partnership with Travis Head, who played aggressively. However, as wickets continued to fall around him, Reddy slowed down and struggled with timing on a good batting track. His inability to accelerate further added pressure on SRH’s innings.

The frustration of not fulfilling his role as a finisher seemed to get to him. His dismissal not only dented SRH’s chances of posting a formidable total but also led to an emotional outburst rarely seen from the young cricketer.

SRH’s batting woes against LSG

Despite contributions from Travis Head (47 off 28 balls) and late cameos by Aniket Verma (36 off 13 balls) and Pat Cummins (18 off 4 balls), SRH managed only 190/9 in their 20 overs. On a pitch that favored batting, this total was below par. LSG’s bowlers, led by Shardul Thakur (4 wickets), kept SRH under control despite brief moments of brilliance from their batters.

LSG’s dominant chase

Lucknow Super Giants made light work of SRH’s target, chasing it down in just 16.1 overs with five wickets to spare. Nicholas Pooran stole the show with an explosive knock of 70 off just 26 balls, supported by Mitchell Marsh’s 52 off 31 balls. Their aggressive partnership ensured that LSG cruised to victory comfortably.

For Reddy and Sunrisers Hyderabad, this match served as a reminder of cricket’s unpredictability and emotional intensity. While Reddy’s helmet smash highlighted his passion and disappointment, it also underscored the pressure young players face in high-stakes games like the IPL. As SRH prepare for their next clash against Delhi Capitals in Visakhapatnam on March 30, Reddy will look to bounce back stronger and contribute more effectively to his team’s cause. In contrast, LSG will carry forward their momentum into their upcoming home game against Punjab Kings on April 1.
