The Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad witnessed an exciting start to Match 6 of IPL 2025 as Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), led by Rishabh Pant, faced Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Pant won the toss and opted to bowl first, aiming to capitalize on the pitch conditions that promised early assistance for bowlers. With SRH boasting explosive batters like Ishan Kishan and Travis Head, LSG needed a strong bowling performance to contain them. Shardul Thakur rose to the occasion with a sensational double strike that shifted the momentum early in the game.

Shardul Thakur strikes two wickets in two balls

Thakur, known for his knack for breaking partnerships, delivered a pivotal second over that sent shockwaves through SRH’s camp. His first victim was Abhishek Sharma, who had been looking dangerous after scoring freely in previous games. Thakur dug one short outside off, tempting Sharma into a pull shot. However, Abhishek mistimed it, sending the ball straight to Nicholas Pooran at deep square leg -a well-placed fielder who made no mistake.

The drama intensified on the very next ball as Ishan Kishan walked in fresh from a scintillating century in SRH’s previous match. Thakur bowled a length delivery down the leg side, inducing a faint edge from Kishan. The ball nestled safely into Pant’s gloves behind the stumps, silencing the crowd and leaving SRH reeling at two wickets down. Kishan’s dismissal was particularly crucial given his recent form and ability to dominate powerplays.

Hat-trick ball tension: Nitish Reddy holds firm

With two wickets in two balls, Shardul Thakur stood on the brink of a hat-trick as Nitish Reddy walked in to face the challenge. Sensing an opportunity to complete the milestone, Thakur unleashed a pinpoint yorker, aimed at dismantling Reddy’s stumps. However, the batter showcased quick reflexes, managing to dig it out and squeeze a single toward the leg side. Though Thakur was denied the hat-trick, his fiery over had already dealt a severe blow to SRH, shifting the momentum firmly in his team’s favor.

Travis Head leads SRH’s counterattack after LSG’s early strikes

While SRH lost two early wickets, Travis Head remained undeterred, sticking to his aggressive approach. Shardul Thakur attempted to swing the ball full against Head but ended up delivering multiple full tosses. The Australian batter capitalized on these errors, drilling one straight down the ground for four, showing no inclination to curb his attacking instincts. Nitish Reddy also joined the counteroffensive, finding the boundary off the final delivery of Thakur’s over, which yielded 12 runs despite being an eventful six-ball spell.

Thakur’s double strike, however, proved crucial in disrupting SRH’s plans for a strong start. By dismissing two key batters – Abhishek and Kishan- he forced SRH into an early damage-control phase during the powerplay. Though Head and Reddy managed to stabilize the innings briefly, Thakur’s early breakthroughs ensured LSG maintained control over the contest. At the end of the powerplay, SRH reached 62/2, keeping the chase alive despite LSG’s strong start.
