The Indian team management has opted for KL Rahul as the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025, leaving Rishabh Pant on the bench. So far, Rahul has featured in all matches, taking on the dual responsibility behind the stumps and with the bat. His performances have been steady, justifying the decision to back him over Pant.
However, this move has sparked mixed reactions among experts and fans. While some support the decision, citing Rahul’s consistency and adaptability, others believe Pant’s aggressive style and game-changing ability should not be overlooked. The debate continues as India progresses in the tournament.
KL Rahul on competition with Rishabh Pant
Speaking about the competition with Pant, Rahul acknowledged the challenge but maintained that he focuses on his strengths rather than trying to replicate Pant’s game.
“There is [competition]—I won’t lie. He’s obviously a very, very talented player, and he has shown all of us how aggressive and quickly he can change the game. So yes, there’s always the temptation for the team, the captain, and the coach to either play him or play me,” Rahul said in a pre-match press conference on Friday.
The 32-year-old further emphasized that his approach is to stick to his own game rather than compete directly with Pant.
“For me, if I’m given the opportunity, I try and see what I can do best. I’m not trying to compete with Rishabh or play like him, and when he gets his opportunities, I’m sure he isn’t going to try to play like anybody else. He is picked based on what he can provide for the team, and the same applies to me,” Rahul added.

Problem of plenty a positive sign for India?
India’s selection dilemma between Rahul and Pant reflects the team’s depth in the wicketkeeping department. While Rahul offers stability and composure, Pant brings an X-factor with his fearless strokeplay. This abundance of talent is a good headache for the management, as both players bring unique strengths to the team.
With crucial matches ahead, India may need to reassess its strategy depending on conditions and opposition. Whether Rahul continues as the first-choice keeper or Pant gets a chance remains to be seen, but having two world-class options certainly strengthens India’s squad depth.
