New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has unveiled a 13-member men’s squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Pakistan, scheduled to begin on March 29, 2025, at McLean Park, Napier.
With several regular players unavailable due to IPL commitments and injuries, the squad combines experienced players and promising newcomers.
Tom Latham to lead in the absence of Mitchell Santner
Wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham will lead the Black Caps in the absence of regular captain Mitchell Santner, who is currently participating in the IPL 2025. Latham, known for his calm demeanor and tactical acumen, has previously captained New Zealand in various formats and brings a wealth of experience to the role. His ability to anchor the innings and guide the team in pressure situations makes him a dependable choice. With his leadership skills and batting consistency, Latham will be expected to steer the team effectively in Santner’s absence.
Nick Kelly and Muhammad Abbas earn maiden call-ups
Wellington Firebirds duo Nick Kelly and Muhammad Abbas have earned their maiden call-ups to the national side. Kelly has been in stellar form in domestic cricket, amassing 749 runs in the Plunket Shield with four centuries and scoring a fifth List A century earlier this year. Abbas has impressed with his performances in the Ford Trophy, scoring 340 runs at an average of 42.50, including his maiden List A century.
Will O’Rourke to spearhead bowling attack
With injuries sidelining Matt Henry and workload management ruling out Kyle Jamieson, Will O’Rourke will spearhead the pace attack alongside Jacob Duffy, Nathan Smith, and Ben Sears. Leg-spinner Adi Ashok also returns to provide spin options.
