“Pakistan cricket is in ICU because…”: Shahid Afridi makes bold remarks against PAK players and PCB
Our cricket has been in the ICU for quite some time: Shahid Afridi (PC: X)

In a scathing critique, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has lambasted the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for its recent decisions, stating that Pakistan cricket is in the “ICU” due to a series of incorrect choices. His comments come in the wake of all-rounder Shadab Khan’s surprise recall to the T20I squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand. Afridi’s remarks highlight the deep-seated issues within Pakistan cricket, including a lack of continuity, accountability and a pervasive blame culture.

Critique of Shadab Khan’s recall

Afridi’s criticism centres on the selection of Shadab, who was out of favour since the last T20 World Cup. Shadab has been named vice-captain under Salman Agha for the New Zealand tour, a decision that has left Afridi perplexed. “On what basis has he been recalled? What are his performances in domestic cricket or otherwise that he has been picked again?” Afridi questioned during a media interaction.

Shadab’s recent form has been underwhelming, with him scoring just 44 runs and failing to take any wickets in four innings during the T20 World Cup 2024. In his last 10 domestic matches, he managed only two half-centuries and took five wickets4. Afridi’s skepticism about Shadab’s selection underscores concerns about the PCB’s decision-making process.

Lack of continuity and accountability

Afridi emphasized the absence of continuity and accountability within the PCB. He noted that frequent changes in captains, coaches, and players have destabilized the team, leading to poor performances.

“All the time we talk about preparations and when an event comes and we flop then we talk about surgery. Fact is Pakistan cricket is in ICU because of incorrect decisions,” Afridi lamented.

“There is no continuity or consistency in the Board’s decisions and policies. We keep changing captains, coaches, or some players, but in the end, what is the accountability for Board officials?”

This lack of stability is compounded by a blame culture where coaches and management often deflect criticism onto players to save their jobs. Afridi described this as damaging to the morale of players and staff, stating, “How can our cricket progress when there is a sword hanging constantly over the captain and coaches’ heads?”

Impact on Pakistan cricket

Afridi’s remarks reflect a broader concern about the state of Pakistan cricket. The team has faced significant challenges in recent years, including inconsistent performances and leadership changes. The recall of Shadab, despite his recent form, has raised questions about the PCB’s selection criteria and its ability to make decisions based on merit rather than favouritism.

As Pakistan prepares for its series against New Zealand, the team faces not only external challenges but also internal strife. Afridi’s comments serve as a wake-up call for the PCB to reassess its strategies and focus on building a stable and competitive team.
