Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad‘s decision to bat at number three instead of opening has come under scrutiny following the team’s disappointing performance in IPL 2025. With only one win from their first three matches, questions are being raised about the effectiveness of the current batting order, particularly the struggles of opener Rahul Tripathi.

Ruturaj Gaikwad explains reason behind his changed batting position

In a recent post-match presentation, Gaikwad explained the rationale behind his batting position, revealing that the decision was part of a pre-planned strategy formulated during the auction. He elaborated that in previous seasons, experienced batters like Ajinkya Rahane played key roles in the middle order. To maintain balance, CSK decided that Gaikwad, who usually opens, would shift to number three, allowing Tripathi to play an aggressive role at the top.

Gaikwad defended the decision by stating, “Over the years, Ajinkya [Rahane] batted at three, and [Ambati] Rayudu was taking care of the middle overs. We thought it would be better if I came a bit late to take care of those crucial middle phases, while Tripathi could utilize the powerplay with his attacking intent.”

However, despite this tactical shift, CSK have struggled in the initial matches, with Tripathi managing only 30 runs across three innings, including a modest 23 against Rajasthan Royals in their latest encounter.

CSK’s inability to start strong a significant issue: Gaikwad

In their recent match against Rajasthan Royals on March 30, CSK suffered a six-wicket loss while chasing a target of 183 runs. The team struggled with early wickets, and although Gaikwad attempted to anchor the innings, his dismissal led to a batting collapse. Reflecting on the game, Gaikwad admitted that CSK’s inability to start strong has been a significant issue.

“We haven’t been getting good starts, but once we do, things will be different,” he noted before highlighting lapses in fielding as another contributing factor to the defeat.
