The future of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) appears to be on a steady path, with IPL chairman Arun Dhumal addressing the potential for expansion amid ongoing developments.
Current status of WPL teams
As it stands, the WPL features five teams, and Dhumal has confirmed that there are no immediate plans to increase this number. “To further strengthen this tournament for the time being, we want to consolidate before we take a call on further addition of any team,” he was quoted as saying to PTI. This decision reflects the BCCI’s focus on solidifying the league’s foundation following its significant growth over the past three years.
BCCI ‘s future plans
While there is a strong interest in expanding the league, Dhumal emphasized that any changes would not occur until after 2026. The BCCI aims to evaluate the league’s performance and audience engagement before considering the addition of new franchises. This cautious approach is intended to ensure that the league continues to thrive without compromising its quality.
The WPL has experienced remarkable growth, with increasing attendance and broadcast numbers, signaling a positive trajectory for women’s cricket in India. Dhumal expressed optimism about the future, noting that the competition has a lot of scope to improve.
“Within three editions, WPL has grown phenomenally in terms of traction, for in-stadium attendance. All the broadcast numbers are very, very encouraging. And it has given new impetus to women’s cricket worldwide,” he added.
“So, we are hoping this continues to grow. And this augurs very well for not only the tournament, but women’s cricket in general.”

Impact of future tours programme
Starting in 2026, the WPL will also benefit from a dedicated window in January-February as part of the ICC’s new Future Tours Programme for women’s cricket. This strategic scheduling is designed to enhance visibility and avoid conflicts with other major tournaments, thereby fostering greater participation and viewership.
While expansion of teams in the WPL is not imminent, the league’s current trajectory suggests a promising future for women’s cricket in India. The BCCI’s strategic focus on consolidation and careful planning indicates a commitment to building a sustainable and successful league.
