Sophie Ecclestone produced a moment of brilliance to break the flourishing 101-run partnership between Harleen Deol and Beth Mooney in Match 15 of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 match between Gujarat Giants and UP Warriroz.

Sophie Ecclestone’s magnificent delivery to dismiss Harleen Deol in WPL 2025

Ecclestone, known for her accuracy and ability to deceive batters, delivered a fuller ball right on the stumps, forcing Deol into a poor shot selection. Attempting to manufacture room for a cut shot, Deol backed away but completely misjudged the trajectory. The ball skidded through at a quicker pace than expected, sneaking past her bat and crashing into the stumps. The Gujarat Giants batter, who had been playing fluently, was left in disbelief as she looked back at the shattered timber.

Deol had been in fine form, scoring a brisk 45 off 32 deliveries with six boundaries, and was well on her way to a well-deserved half-century. However, Ecclestone’s precision and ability to execute her plan to perfection proved too much for her.

The breakthrough came at a crucial time for the Warriorz, just when Giants were looking to accelerate towards a massive total. The dismissal lifted the spirits of the fielding side, with Ecclestone receiving enthusiastic applause from her teammates. This was a textbook example of how a bowler can outthink a batter, using variations in flight and pace to create an opportunity. With the set batter dismissed, the momentum momentarily swung back in favour of the Warriorz as they aimed to restrict Giants to a manageable total.

Beth Mooney’s masterclass puts Gujarat Giants in command against UP Warriorz

The Giants have taken control of their crucial WPL 2025 clash against the Warriorz, reaching 144/2 in 16 overs at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. With opener Mooney playing a sensational knock, Gujarat are well on course for a massive total after being put into bat first.

Mooney, leading the charge with the bat, has been unstoppable, racing to 85 off just 54 balls, striking 15 fours at a blistering strike rate of 157.40. Her elegant strokeplay and ability to find gaps have made life difficult for the Warriorz bowlers. She found an able partner in Deol, who contributed a fluent 45 off 32 balls, ensuring the scoreboard kept ticking. The duo stitched together a vital 101-run stand for the second wicket, stabilizing Gujarat’s innings after an early setback.

The Warriorz had a promising start when Chinelle Henry dismissed Dayalan Hemalatha for just 2 runs in the very first over. However, their bowlers struggled to contain Mooney and Deol, who played risk-free yet aggressive cricket. Ecclestone finally broke the partnership in the 13th over, clean bowling Deol as she attempted to cut a quicker delivery.

Despite that breakthrough, Gujarat remains in a commanding position with skipper Ashleigh Gardner now at the crease. The Warriorz’s bowlers have lacked penetration, with Kranti Goud (0/33 in 3 overs) and Grace Harris (0/36 in 4 overs) proving expensive. With four overs still left, The Giants will be aiming to cross the 180-run mark and put the Warriorz under immense pressure in the chase.
