In a high-octane thriller at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal, Sunrisers Hyderabad pulled off a record-breaking run chase to defeat Punjab Kings by 8 wickets in Match 27 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The home crowd witnessed fireworks as Abhishek Sharma’s breathtaking 141 off just 55 deliveries powered SRH to a monumental chase of 246, making it the second-highest successful run chase in IPL history.

Punjab Kings post mammoth total on the board

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Punjab Kings came out with aggressive intent right from the beginning. Young opener Priyansh Arya set the tone with a blistering 36 off just 13 balls, peppered with 4 sixes. His partner Prabhsimran Singh continued the momentum, striking 42 off 23 with 7 boundaries. But it was skipper Shreyas Iyer who stole the limelight in the first innings, unleashing a masterclass with a quickfire 82 off 36 deliveries, smashing sixes with remarkable ease.

Despite a slight stutter in the middle with the dismissals of Shashank Singh (2) and Glenn Maxwell (3), a late assault by Marcus Stoinis, who bludgeoned 34 off 11, ensured Punjab reached a daunting 245/6 in 20 overs. Harshal Patel stood out with the ball for SRH, bagging 4 wickets for 42 runs, while youngster Eshan Malinga chipped in with 2 scalps.

SRH’s thunderous reply – Abhishek Sharma leads the storm

Chasing a towering target of 246, Sunrisers Hyderabad needed something extraordinary—and they got exactly that from their opening duo. Travis Head provided early impetus with a fluent 66 off 37 balls, setting a solid platform. However, it was Abhishek who turned the game into a spectacle, unleashing a brutal assault on PBKS bowlers. His 141-run knock, laced with 14 fours and 10 massive sixes, left the opposition stunned and the fans in raptures.

Abhishek dominated every bowler he faced, neutralizing the spin threat of Yuzvendra Chahal and Glenn Maxwell while dispatching the pacers to all parts of the ground. He stitched a 160-run opening partnership with Head before finishing the job with Heinrich Klaasen (21* off 14) in the 19th over. SRH ended their innings at 247/2 in just 18.3 overs, sealing one of the most iconic chases in IPL history.

Punjab’s bowling woes continue

It was a forgettable outing for the Punjab Kings bowlers. Despite having a mountain of runs to defend, they failed to apply pressure as SRH batters found boundaries with alarming consistency. Arshdeep Singh and Chahal were the only wicket-takers, while the rest of the attack was put to the sword. Marco Jansen and Maxwell conceded 39 and 40 runs respectively in their short spells, and the absence of control in the middle overs hurt the visitors dearly.
