Gujarat Titans (GT) have suffered a significant setback as their star all-rounder, Glenn Phillips, has been ruled out for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Phillips has left the GT camp and will soon be returning to New Zealand.
Reason behind Glenn Phillips leaving IPL 2025 mid-way
The 28-year-old sustained an injury during Gujarat Titans’ away fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on April 6 and it is reported to be the reason behind him leaving IPL 2025 mid-way. Ironically, Phillips hadn’t featured in the playing XI for any of GT’s matches this season and was on the field as a substitute fielder when the incident took place. While attempting to field a ball near the boundary and make a throw during the sixth over of SRH’s innings, Phillips pulled up sharply and collapsed, visibly in pain. He received immediate medical attention and had to be carried off the field.
Subsequent assessments confirmed the severity of the groin injury, necessitating his withdrawal from the tournament. Though an official announcement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding Phillips pulling out of the remaining IPL 2025 is still anticipated.

Phillips’ exit: A big blow to Gujarat Titans
Phillips’ premature exit is a blow to the Titans, who had acquired the dynamic Kiwi at the IPL 2025 auction for his base price of INR 2 crore. His acquisition followed a stellar performance in the recent ICC Champions Trophy, where he played a key role in New Zealand’s journey to the final against India. Phillips was lauded for his explosive batting potential, handy off-spin and particularly his exceptional fielding prowess, highlighted by several breathtaking catches during the Champions Trophy held in Pakistan and Dubai.
Despite his reputation and form coming into the IPL, Phillips found himself on the sidelines for GT’s initial matches. Team management opted for other combinations, preferring different overseas players and domestic talents like Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia in the lower-middle order roles, which Phillips might have occupied. His injury occurred during his first time on the field this season, albeit in a substitute capacity.
