MS Dhoni has long been a symbol of calm, experience, and unmatched leadership in the Indian Premier League. But as the 2025 season unfolds, conversations around his potential retirement are once again gaining traction. Former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs recently added fuel to the debate with a straightforward take on Dhoni’s IPL future.
Herschelle Gibbs explains why MS Dhoni should opt for retirement
Responding to a fan’s question on X (formerly Twitter), Gibbs was asked, “Your honest take on Dhoni’s IPL retirement… Is it the right time to call his time?”
The former Proteas batter didn’t hesitate and replied: “Yes mate, he doesn’t play enough other cricket to maintain fitness and scoring runs most importantly.”

Gibbs’ comment reflects a concern many cricket analysts have voiced — Dhoni’s limited cricketing activity outside the IPL could be hampering his match fitness and batting rhythm. The 42-year-old legend hasn’t participated in any form of domestic or international cricket outside the IPL since his international retirement in August 2020.

Dhoni still a fan-favourite despite limited role
Despite the fitness concerns, Dhoni remains a central figure for Chennai Super Kings. His tactical brain, and electric presence behind the stumps continue to energize the team and fans alike. Even in a limited batting role, his presence in the dressing room is considered invaluable.
The 2025 season has seen glimpses of vintage Dhoni – quick glove work, shrewd bowling changes, and of course, the occasional big hit. However, his fitness and mobility, especially while running between the wickets or moving sideways behind the stumps, have often been under scrutiny.
A question only Dhoni can answer
While opinions from experts like Gibbs make headlines, the final decision rests with Dhoni himself. Known for his self-awareness and timing, fans trust that when Dhoni does choose to walk away from the IPL, it will be on his own terms — just like he has always done throughout his illustrious career.
