Rishabh Pant, the most expensive player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), is facing a challenging season with the bat. Having been bought by Lucknow Super Giants for a whopping Rs 27 crore, the expectations were sky-high. However, the captain’s performance this year has been far from stellar, with only 106 runs in 8 innings across 9 matches at a meager average of 15.14.
Rishabh Pant’s staggering drop in form and disappointing impact on the game
Pant’s struggles with the bat reached a new low during the 40th match of IPL 2025 against Delhi Capitals, when he made a bizarre decision to come in at number seven rather than the expected number four position. Pant’s poor performance with the bat has cast a shadow over his leadership as captain of Lucknow.
The team had a solid start in the match with Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh providing a strong foundation. Markram’s 52 runs kept LSG on track for a potentially larger total. However, after Markram’s dismissal, the LSG innings stuttered. Instead of Pant stepping in to anchor the innings, the team opted to send Abdul Samad, David Miller and Ayush Badoni ahead of him. This decision was strange, especially considering Pant’s high price tag and reputation as one of the most destructive batters in IPL history. Despite a decent knock from Badoni (36 off 21 balls), the rest of the innings failed to capitalize on the early momentum, with Miller managing just 14 runs from 15 balls.

Pant’s disappointing innings against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025
Pant’s performance against Delhi in IPL 2025 epitomized his struggles with the bat this season. Coming in to bat with just two balls remaining in the innings, Pant had very little time to make any substantial contribution. His outing at the crease was a quick and dismal one. The first delivery he faced from Mukesh Kumar was a short of a length ball, to which Pant charged down the pitch, attempting to slog across the line. He missed the ball entirely, offering no real impact on the match. On the very next ball, Pant’s luck ran out. Mukesh, bowling from around the wicket, went full and straight, and Pant, in an attempt to play a reverse lap shot past short third, could only manage to get his pads in the way. The ball struck his pads and then ricocheted to hit the stumps. Pant was out for a duck, marking yet another low point in his season. This dismissal also ensured that LSG’s total of 159 was their lowest score of the season.
Here’s how fans reacted:
Has the think tank drained out in the lsg dressing room! Absolute nonsense in not having a guy like pant bat more deliveries! The match was lost before he came into bat! Well played DC and brillaint bowling by Mukesh! #LSGvsDC

Pant sent all the batters in vs LSG, even used the Impact Player… only to walk in at 19.4, play a dot on 19.5, and get out for a duck on the last ball of the innings 😭😭

Lol, LSG really used Badoni as IP before sending Pant over.
From being one of the best Indian Batters in IPL to becoming Taniya Bhatia lite, it has been quite a journey for him, I am pretty sure that he has a redemption arc within him but that redemption arc isn't on this path.

Sanju Samson might fail in consecutive matches but he will never hide himself in the batting order like Rishabh Pant. The biggest disrespect for Sanju Samson has been getting compared to mediocre batter called Rishabh Pant.
