Rajasthan Royals’ vice-captain Riyan Parag was visibly furious as he walked off the field after a controversial decision saw him dismissed during the high-stakes Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 encounter against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on April 9. The 23-year-old, who has been enjoying a stellar season, lost his cool following a tight call that went against him and resulted in him smashing his bat in frustration after reaching the dugout.

Riyan Parag’s bright start dimmed by dubious call

Chasing a daunting 218 for victory, Parag came in to bat after the early departure of Yashasvi Jaiswal (6) and Nitish Rana (1). He immediately impressed with a sublime flick for six off Mohammed Siraj, showing confidence and composure. Alongside Sanju Samson, he began to rebuild the Royals’ innings, adding quick runs and striking a couple more sixes. RR looked in a strong position, reaching 57 in the powerplay. However, the turning point came in the seventh over when Kulwant Khejroliya bowled a delivery outside off-stump that seemed to beat Parag’s bat. Jos Buttler, keeping for GT, claimed the catch and the on-field umpire raised his finger almost instantly. Parag, visibly shocked, reviewed the decision without hesitation.

Third umpire’s decision fuels controversy

The Ultra Edge review added to the drama. While the bat made contact with the ground as Parag attempted the shot, there was also a spike on the snickometer just before the bat hit the turf. The third umpire, after examining the footage, decided to go with the on-field decision and upheld the dismissal. Parag, clearly stunned by the verdict, argued briefly with the on-field umpire, seemingly suggesting that the spike was a result of the bat brushing the ground and not the ball. Walking off in disbelief, Parag shook his head repeatedly and looked dejected. As he reached the dugout, he smashed his bat in anger – a rare outburst from the usually composed batter. GT pacer Mohammed Siraj, in a gesture of sportsmanship, walked over to console him as he departed on 26 off 13 deliveries, having looked in ominous form.

Parag’s strong IPL 2025 campaign continues despite setback

Despite the controversial exit, Parag has had an excellent season so far, accumulating 135 runs from five innings at a strike rate of 160.71. He also captained the side in the first three matches, stepping in for Sanju Samson who was recovering from a finger injury. His maturity, aggressive strokeplay, and leadership under pressure have made him a standout performer for the Royals. Earlier in the match, the Titans piled on a massive total of 217/6, powered by a brilliant 82 off 53 balls by opener Sai Sudharsan. In response, the Royals crumbled under pressure, getting bowled out for 159 in 19.2 overs and succumbing to a 58-run defeat. The loss was further compounded by the controversial dismissal of one of their key performers, which may well be a talking point for days to come.
