Indian pacer Mohit Sharma recently opened up about a humorous nickname given to him by legendary wicketkeeper-batter and current Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni. In a candid chat with ESPNcricinfo, Mohit shared the backstory behind being called “Maria Sharapova” by Dhoni — a nod to the Russian tennis star known for her loud grunts during matches.
Mohit Sharma on why MS Dhoni called him Maria Sharapova
Responding to a question about the distinct grunt heard during his delivery stride, Mohit joked, “Lawn tennis waali [Like in tennis]! I’m not sure how it came about. I try to stop it, but it is what it is.” He revealed that Dhoni playfully compared his grunt to that of Sharapova, making the nickname stick.
“Mahi bhai nicknamed me Maria Sharapova. He used to say: ‘You grunt as loud as some of the tennis players,’” Mohit recounted.
“I’d say: ‘With the grunt, batsmen will feel the ball will come at 145-150kph even though the ball comes slower, so it is a plus point for me!’” added Mohit.

From net bowler to IPL resurgence
Once a regular in the Indian team, Mohit last played an international match in 2015. However, he managed to script a remarkable comeback in the IPL. After initially joining Gujarat Titans as a net bowler in 2022, he made a full-fledged return to the tournament in 2023 and ended the season as the second-highest wicket-taker.
Mohit also bowled the crucial final over in the IPL 2023 final, where former teammate Ravindra Jadeja snatched victory for CSK, denying Gujarat Titans their second consecutive title.
In IPL 2025, Mohit is representing Delhi Capitals. So far, he has played five matches and picked up two wickets. While his on-field impact has been modest this season, his off-field anecdotes and spirit continue to entertain fans.
