Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) head coach Andy Flower has provided a much-needed update on Virat Kohli’s injury after the superstar batter hurt his finger during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 2. Kohli sustained the injury while attempting to field a shot during GT’s chase, momentarily leaving RCB fans in concern over his availability for the remainder of the season.

The incident took place in the 12th over of the Titans’ innings when Sai Sudharsan attempted a powerful sweep shot off RCB spinner Krunal Pandya. Kohli, who was stationed at deep mid-wicket, sprinted forward to stop the ball but ended up hurting his finger in the process. Despite his valiant effort, the ball slipped through his hands and raced away to the boundary, visibly leaving him in discomfort. Kohli was seen shaking his hand in pain before continuing on the field.  Given his importance to RCB, Kohli’s injury caused concern among fans and cricket experts alike. However, head coach Andy Flower alleviated fears after the match, confirming that Kohli was doing fine.

“Virat looks fine, he’s okay,” Flower assured during the post-match press conference, putting to rest speculations about a potential serious injury.

RCB’s struggles continue as Gujarat Titans secure convincing win

While Kohli’s injury was a worrying moment, it was RCB’s overall performance that ultimately proved costly in their eight-wicket loss to the Titans.  After being put into bat first, RCB could only manage a below-par total of 170 runs in their 20 overs. The team suffered a batting collapse, losing four crucial wickets inside the powerplay. As a result, their innings never gained the momentum needed to post a challenging score on what is traditionally a high-scoring Chinnaswamy surface.

In response, the Titans chased down the target with ease, finishing at 173/2 in just 17.5 overs. England’s Jos Buttler led the charge with a stunning 73 off 39 balls not out, while young sensation Sudharsan contributed a valuable 49 off 36 deliveries. Sherfane Rutherford provided the finishing touches, smashing an unbeaten 30 off 18 balls not out to seal the win for the Titans.

What’s next for Virat Kohli and RCB?

With Flower confirming that Kohli’s finger injury isn’t serious, RCB supporters can breathe a sigh of relief. However, the team will need to regroup quickly and address their recurring issues, particularly their inconsistency with the bat. With the IPL 2025 season still in its early stages, RCB will be hoping to bounce back strongly in their upcoming game and regain lost ground in the tournament.

Their next game against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede on April 7, will be crucial as they aim to turn their campaign around, and Kohli’s fitness will be closely monitored ahead of that fixture. RCB’s star batter has been in solid touch so far, and the team will be banking on his experience and leadership to guide them to better results in the coming games.
