The retirement talk surrounding MS Dhoni refuses to fade. With Chennai Super Kings languishing at the bottom of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 table, fans are wondering if this is the last dance for the 43-year-old legend. At the toss in Chennai before CSK clashed with Punjab Kings, Danny Morrison once again asked the big question. And Dhoni, in true style, answered full of suspense and wit.
MS Dhoni’s clever reply: IPL 2026 or a Final Farewell?
For the third consecutive season, Dhoni faced a barrage of questions regarding his IPL future. This time, it was Morrison, the broadcaster, who asked Dhoni whether he would be returning for the next IPL season.
Morrison, clearly expecting a direct answer, asked:
“Does that mean you will be coming for the next season?”
To the roaring applause from the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Dhoni replied with a smile:
“I don’t know, I don’t know. I am coming for the next game,:
The cryptic answer had the entire stadium buzzing with excitement. It was a stark contrast to his straightforward comments in the past, like the famous “Definitely Not” back in 2020. This time, however, Dhoni’s response carried an air of mystery, fueling the ongoing debate about his future.

CSK’s struggles add weight to Dhoni’s uncertain future
Dhoni’s non-committal response comes at a time when CSK’s campaign is faltering. With just two wins from their first nine matches in IPL 2025, the team is struggling to find its rhythm. They are dangerously close to elimination, and their once-feared home advantage has completely evaporated with four consecutive losses at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Having taken over the captaincy midway through the season after Ruturaj Gaikwad‘s injury, Dhoni has been unable to turn the tide for his team. In his pre-match comments, he admitted that the season had been challenging. He acknowledged the difficulties in adapting to a post-auction squad rebuild, and the failure to extract home advantage, which has traditionally been their strength.
“We’ve been a side where we don’t make a lot of changes. But this season it hasn’t worked for us… You have to see where a batter is better suited,” Dhoni concluded.
