The 33rd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) witnessed a concerning moment when MI’s leg-spinner Karn Sharma sustained a bleeding injury while fielding during the early stages of the first innings.
Karn Sharma suffers thumb injury against SRH
The match, being played at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, began with MI captain Hardik Pandya winning the toss and opting to bowl first. SRH openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head walked out to bat, facing MI’s pace-heavy attack. The opening two overs yielded just 15 runs for SRH, with the MI bowlers keeping things tight.
In the third over, Deepak Chahar was introduced into the attack. On the fifth delivery of the over, Abhishek Sharma tried to take charge. Advancing down the track, he looked to muscle the ball over mid-wicket but mistimed the shot. The ball, coming off the inner half of the bat, didn’t quite carry and dropped on the half-volley toward mid-wicket.
Stationed in that region was Karn Sharma, who attempted to catch the ball with a diving effort. In doing so, the 36-year-old cricketer appeared to jam his fingers into the turf awkwardly. The impact led to visible bleeding from one of his fingers, forcing him to leave the field for immediate medical attention.
Karn’s injury briefly halted play as medical staff rushed in. While the extent of the injury is yet to be confirmed, the bleeding suggested a significant blow, raising concerns over his availability for the remainder of the match and potentially for MI’s upcoming fixtures.

Karn Sharma’s performance in the IPL
Despite limited game time in the 2025 season so far, Karn Sharma remains a valuable member of the MI squad. In his most recent appearance against Delhi Capitals (DC), the leg-spinner bowled four overs for 36 runs, picking up 3 wickets. With an economy rate of 9.00 in that match, his performance turned out to be game-changing for the visiting team.
A veteran of the IPL, Karn has played 85 matches across various franchises, claiming 79 wickets with best bowling figures of 4/16. His T20 experience and ability to handle high-pressure scenarios make him a dependable asset. While his batting has been largely secondary, he has contributed 351 runs in his IPL career, with a highest score of 39.
The Mumbai franchise acquired him during the 2025 IPL Mega Auction for INR 50 lakh, signaling their continued faith in his experience and tactical acumen. Though not a frontline star, Karn’s utility in controlling the middle overs remains crucial for MI’s spin department.
With the tournament now approaching its mid-phase, MI will be hoping Karn recovers quickly and returns to action, especially with key matches ahead.
