Jasprit Bumrah achieved a historic milestone during Mumbai Indians’ (MI) thrilling IPL 2025 encounter against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Wankhede Stadium. The star pacer surpassed Lasith Malinga to become the highest wicket-taker in the history of the Mumbai franchise.

Both Bumrah and Malinga, legends of their time, have been loyal servants for MI, playing their entire IPL careers for the team. Bumrah’s consistency and match-winning abilities have now officially placed him above his iconic mentor.

Jasprit Bumrah goes past Lasith Malinga

The special moment came when Bumrah was introduced into the attack in the third over of LSG’s innings. He struck immediately with a sharp, back-of-length delivery aimed at middle and leg stump. Aiden Markram attempted to work it across the line but got an inside edge, and Naman Dhir at backward square leg completed a smart catch. With that dismissal, Bumrah clinched his 171st IPL wicket for MI, moving ahead of Malinga’s long-standing record. The Wankhede crowd rose to its feet, acknowledging one of Mumbai Indians’ greatest match-winners.

Mumbai Indians’ strong batting effort

Earlier in the day, Lucknow Super Giants won the toss and opted to field. MI’s batting unit made full use of the conditions as Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton provided a flying start. Rickelton played a fluent innings, scoring 58 runs, while Suryakumar Yadav chipped in with a brisk 54, ensuring that the hosts posted an imposing total of 215/7. The momentum generated by the top order set the stage perfectly for Bumrah and the bowlers to capitalize.
