In a bizarre moment during Match 41 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against his former side, Mumbai Indians (MI), Ishan Kishan walked off despite being not out in the replay. The SRH keeper-batter departed after a leg-side delivery that was initially signaled wide. Replays showed no contact with the bat, but the umpire raised his finger after seeing Kishan walking himself despite the opposition team appealing for it. This triggered outrage and trolling online, as fans questioned both the batter’s and the umpire’s judgment.

The moment unfolded in the second over of the innings. Deepak Chahar bowled one down leg, barely appealing as the umpire signaled it wide. But to everyone’s surprise, Ishan Kishan began walking back to the pavilion, apparently convinced he had nicked it. MI skipper Hardik Pandya patted him on the helmet, either in support or mild disbelief.

The confusion escalated when the umpire, only after Kishan began to walk, reversed his wide call and raised his finger to officially declare him out. The sequence stunned viewers and commentators alike. Kishan had essentially given himself out before any real appeal. Yet, when the replays were shown, the drama intensified: no spike on the Snicko, no deviation, absolutely nothing to suggest an edge. What made it worse was that Chahar himself had walked back to his mark and barely celebrated, while Ryan Rickelton behind the stumps hadn’t gone up with any intent. It was a dismissal born entirely out of Kishan’s assumption and oddly validated by the umpire’s reaction.

Fans brutally troll Ishan Kishan and the on-field umpire

Social media had a field day. Memes flooded in, questioning if Kishan had momentarily forgotten he’d switched franchises, with comments like ‘Paise pahuch gye” and ” Agent Kishan”. But it wasn’t just Kishan in the spotlight. The umpire came under heavy criticism for what appeared to be a reactionary decision. Many pointed out that he didn’t raise his finger until after Kishan walked, which raises serious concerns about officiating standards.  While the gesture of walking may have been sporting, the lack of evidence and formal appeal made it a farcical moment in a high-stakes match. Even neutral fans were baffled by how such an incident could unfold in one of the world’s most-watched cricket leagues.
