In a whirlwind of emotions at Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi made history as the youngest-ever player to debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL), only to be overcome with tears following his dismissal.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi impresses with the bat on his IPL debut

Suryavanshi, representing Rajasthan Royals (RR) against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Saturday (April 19, 2025), announced his arrival in spectacular fashion. Opening the batting alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, he launched his very first ball, delivered by Shardul Thakur, for a massive six. He continued his aggressive approach, hitting another six off his first ball against Avesh Khan in the following over. His quickfire innings of 34 runs off 20 balls included three sixes and two fours, captivating the crowd and showcasing his fearless strokeplay.

The young left-hander formed a formidable 85-run partnership with Jaiswal, demonstrating composure and aggression rarely seen in someone of his age. He took on experienced international bowlers with confidence, displaying remarkable maturity.

However, the dream debut took a dramatic turn in the ninth over. Suryavanshi, attempting to advance down the pitch and play the ball into the leg side, lost his balance. Lucknow Super Giants’ Rishabh Pant swiftly stumped him off a delivery from Aiden Markram. The TV replay confirmed the dismissal, showing Suryavanshi’s back foot was momentarily airborne.
