In a high-stakes IPL 2025 encounter at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to field first against the struggling Chennai Super Kings (CSK). With both teams languishing at the bottom of the table with just two wins each, the match carried do-or-die implications for their playoff hopes. Amid the tension, Sri Lanka’s ambidextrous all-rounder Kamindu Mendis delivered a pivotal moment, uprooting Ravindra Jadeja’s middle stump with a cleverly disguised quicker delivery to leave CSK reeling at 74/4 in the 10th over.

Mendis, known for his rare ability to bowl with both arms, showcased his tactical brilliance in the 10th over. On the third ball of his spell (9.3 overs), Mendis fired a skiddy length delivery at 115 km/h, angling into the left-handed Jadeja. The CSK all-rounder, attempting to whip the ball leg side, misjudged the pace and line, exposing his stumps. The middle stump was sent cartwheeling as Jadeja departed for 21 (17 balls), leaving the home crowd in stunned silence. Mendis’ breakthrough compounded CSK’s woes after early strikes from SRH’s pace attack had already reduced them to 54/3 by the seventh over.

The early wickets set the tone for a tense first innings. SRH’s pace spearhead Mohammed Shami struck with the very first ball, dismissing Shaik Rasheed for a duck and giving Hyderabad immediate momentum. Cummins and Harshal Patel soon joined the party, removing Ayush Mhatre and Sam Curran, respectively, to leave CSK reeling inside the powerplay.

Despite a spirited counterattack from Dewald Brevis, who smashed 42 off just 25 balls with four sixes, and some late resistance from Shivam Dube, CSK struggled to build lasting partnerships. By the end of the their innings, the Super Kings managed to score 154 all out with 1 ball to spare from there allotted 20 overs. Captain MS Dhoni fell cheaply for a score of 6 in his 400th T20 appearance and failing to marshal the lower order but thanks to Deepak Huda‘s gritty knock of 22 runs before falling to Jaydev Unadkat.
