A dismal evening unfolded at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) suffered a crushing seven-wicket defeat at the hands of Gujarat Titans (GT) in their IPL 2025 clash. The loss, SRH’s fourth in just five games this season, not only deepened their early tournament woes but also saw franchise owner Kavya Maran visibly lose her composure in the stands.

SRH’s struggles mount

Asked to bat first, SRH failed to build momentum throughout their innings and managed a subpar total of 152/8 in 20 overs. Gujarat’s Mohammed Siraj was in menacing form, dismantling SRH’s top and middle order with a fiery spell of 4/17. SRH’s innings lacked any real spark, with none of their batters able to convert starts into a match-defining knock.

Travis Head (8), Ishan Kishan (17) and Heinrich Klaasen (27) all fell cheaply, unable to withstand the disciplined bowling attack. Nitish Kumar Reddy top-scored with a cautious 31 off 34 balls, but his innings lacked the firepower to push the total beyond par.

In reply, Gujarat Titans made light work of the chase, crossing the finish line in just 16.4 overs. Shubman Gill anchored the innings with an unbeaten 61, while Washington Sundar chipped in with a brisk cameo (49 off 29). SRH’s bowlers failed to apply any pressure, with GT dominating proceedings from the outset.

The one-sided nature of the contest only intensified the scrutiny on SRH’s underwhelming start to the season.

Kavya Maran loses her cool

As the match slipped further away, all eyes turned to the SRH CEO, Kavya Maran, whose frustration was hard to miss. Known for her animated presence and unwavering support, Kavya was seen shaking her head in disbelief, often engaging in tense discussions with team officials. Television cameras caught her visibly agitated as SRH’s poor batting and lacklustre bowling added to the team’s woes.

Her reactions resonated with thousands of fans in attendance and many more watching from home—fans who expected a resurgence this season, but have instead been met with repeated disappointment.

Mounting pressure on SRH

With just one win from five matches, SRH find themselves in a precarious position. After a promising start against Rajasthan Royals (RR), the team has suffered consecutive defeats to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Delhi Capitals (DC), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and now GT. The pattern of underperformance has raised serious questions about strategy, team balance, and on-field execution.

Captain Pat Cummins, addressing the media post-match, admitted the team needs to reassess its approach: “Three games in a row, it hasn’t come off for us. We need to maybe look back at whether we could have chosen better options… Our batters are best when they take the game on.”

Now, the Orange Army must regroup quickly if they are to salvage their IPL 2025 campaign.
