In a high-octane IPL 2025 clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI), an extraordinary fielding effort by Phil Salt and Tim David sealed a thrilling 12-run victory for RCB in Match 21. The moment, now dubbed the “catch of the season,” came in the final over and turned the tide in RCB’s favour in front of a packed Wankhede crowd.
Phil Salt and Tim David stun MI
With MI needing 19 runs off the last six balls in a stiff chase of 222, Deepak Chahar walked in after Mitchell Santner fell on the first ball of the over. Facing Krunal Pandya, Chahar unleashed a powerful hook on the short-pitched delivery toward deep mid-wicket. Phil Salt, stationed near the boundary, sprinted and leapt into the air to catch the ball. As his momentum carried him beyond the ropes, Salt intelligently flicked the ball back into play.
Tim David, perfectly placed nearby, completed the catch with safe hands. The third umpire reviewed the play to confirm the legality, and after a brief suspense, Chahar was ruled out for a golden duck. The fielding brilliance stunned MI fans and left commentators and viewers in awe.

Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar fire RCB to 221
RCB’s win was set up by a dominant batting display earlier in the evening. Virat Kohli played a classy knock of 67 off 42 balls, anchoring the innings. Skipper Rajat Patidar smashed a rapid 64 off 32 deliveries, while Jitesh Sharma’s explosive 40 from 21 balls propelled RCB to a massive 221/5 – their highest total at the Wankhede in IPL history.

MI fights but falls short
In response, Mumbai Indians showed commendable fight, led by Tilak Varma’s 56 off 29 balls and Hardik Pandya’s blistering 42 off just 15. The pair added 89 runs in a thrilling partnership that had MI eyeing a comeback. But Josh Hazlewood’s dismissal of Hardik and Krunal’s composed final over proved crucial in halting MI’s momentum.
RCB break Wankhede curse
This victory holds historical significance for RCB — it was their first win at the Wankhede Stadium in a decade, ending a frustrating losing streak at Mumbai’s home ground.
For MI, the loss adds to a season of woes. Despite flashes of brilliance from captain Hardik and young gun Tilak, MI remains at the eighth position in the IPL 2025 points table. Their inability to close out games has become a major concern.
