The Indian women’s cricket team, led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, has been fined for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during their opening match of the Sri Lanka Women’s Tri-Series 2025 in Colombo. The International Cricket Council (ICC) imposed the penalty after India was found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate against Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium on April 27.

The sanction falls under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences. As per ICC regulations, teams are penalized five percent of their match fee for each over they fail to bowl within the stipulated time. In this case, India was found to be one over short, even after allowances were made for rain interruptions during the reduced 39-over match.
The charge was formally brought forward by on-field umpires Anna Harris and Nimali Perera, with support from third umpire Lyndon Hannibal and fourth umpire Dedunu de Silva. Vanessa de Silva from the ICC International Panel of Match Referees imposed the fine.
Team India skipper Harmanpreet accepted responsibility for the offence and agreed to the proposed sanction, thereby avoiding the need for a formal hearing. Her acceptance facilitated a swift and smooth resolution to the matter.

Despite the minor setback, the Indian side delivered a commanding performance in their tournament opener. Electing to bowl first, the team bowled out Sri Lanka for 147 in 38.1 overs. Spinner Sneh Rana led the bowling attack with a standout performance, claiming 3 wickets for 31 runs. India chased down the target with ease, reaching 148 in just 29.4 overs.
Young batter Pratika Rawal anchored the chase with an unbeaten half-century, while experienced opener Smriti Mandhana and Harleen Deol added valuable contributions, guiding India to a dominant nine-wicket victory.
India then extended their winning streak with a 15-run win over South Africa in their second match, strengthening their position at the top of the points table. With back-to-back victories, the Indian women’s team looks in fine form as they gear up for the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.
